Females & Pricing

gant77 Jul 31, 2005 08:12 AM

A Tip...
If the females your running into seem more than they are worth, for example a sub-adult that you know will not be ready to breed in the upcoming season, with a price of $300.00 Try looking in the not so obvious Ads, and such.
With the help of a Classified Section that has become very well known, I think it's run by Craig.....
Anyways the point of my story is with some simple Detective work you'll find what your looking for a lot cheaper. For $450.00 I came away with a 3000 Gram Monster Female and her clutch! She had laid a nice 12 egger
I am even more excited about her because she has a date with a Pastel next season as I want to give her a year off to put a little more weight on her, and grow up the couple of other girls that WILL be ready to go in a year, I have a Beautiful PK Het. Pied waiting on those girls! It was a good day!

I read the post about this down below too, and I just wanted to say that all of you in the US should count your blessings. I live in Northern Ontario, Canada, and the prices here for ANYTHING let alone a female ready to breed are extraordinary! I'm always so jealous when I see normals posted for $35 US... I paid more than $200 for my male, and he was a bit over a year old, no fancy genetics, nothin. To get a hatchling, without heading to southern ontario (or paying for shipping, which is easily $100) I'm looking at over $100. We're somewhat isolated from the southern Canadian market, and it's a hassle to ship in from the US (even though I'm on the border w Michigan), so dealers/breeders here can pretty much charge whatever they want. Supply and demand folks, cause I'll pay it... I have to if I want a snake, right? So, count your blessings guys! I don't even want to think about what a nice morph might run me up my way!

have you checked out evanstahlreptiles.com? He tells me all the time about how close he is to the border (he is in Mich.) He has awesome babies at great prices. If your looking for something else I still have to go through all the hatchlings I got and I could let you know what I have. 200.00 is WAY to much for a male. I almost had a heart attack paying 60.00 for mine Yesterday! This is a baby pic. of a tiny hatchling I got from EBV in 03' She is a monster!

Thanks, I thought that was a pretty hefty price tag too! For sure keep me posted. The issue I have, is I spoke to a US breeder about a year ago, about shipping, and apparently when all was said and done to get it across the border was nearly as much as me just buying one for $200 here, and was way more trouble.
Have you done business in Canada before? Maybe this guy just had no clue. ?? Cause I'm certainly not opposed to driving to pick snake/s up if I'm gonna save a tonne of money, but I'm totally unfamiliar w the import regs. for them. Birds I know, as I bred parrots for years, but not sure about snakes.... ??

In order to legally ship or drive a Cites II animal (of which Ball Pythons, Python Regis are) you will have to have CITES documents from the US, USF&W inspections, US Customs clearance, etc. It is not an inexpensive thing to undergo. Now there are those breeders, sellers, and buyers that do ship, drive, etc across the border without proper documentation but they are risking Severe Penalties in doing this illegal exportation. Unfortunately there is no cheap, easy, legal way of exporting from the US.

Bah! Figured as much. I know w parrots, with all the CITES stuff, import duties, etc., it often costs more to bring one across than to buy one here.

Still, with the snake costing me 1/5 or 1/6 the price of what I'd pay here, it might still be beneficial... time and energy I have in spades...money, well, that's another issue. (I'm a grad student)

rkreptiles Jul 31, 2005 01:30 PM

Here is a basic breakdown of the prices associated with import/export. While these are not all the fees and cost and these can vary they give you a pretty good idea. Also the wait on the CITES documents can be from 3 weeks to 4 months to obtain. So for one Ball Python (unless it is a high dollar morph) it really is not financially feasible to export or import.

CITES $50-$100
USF&W Inspection $55-$115
US Customs $25-$50

You need to check the Canadian Classifieds more often, seen 100% Het albino males for $300 CDN or something like that in the past. To get the Canadian classifieds, go to www.kingsnake.ca, then click on classifieds.

Yeah, I've encountered a few good deals there... they've been sold by the time I respond! LOL. its just my luck I guess... I'm not saying there aren't good deals out there in Canada - but in northern ontario, they are few and far between....

nita Jul 31, 2005 03:46 PM

Have you considered the canadian forum sites?? There are lots of good deals on balls there and many are in Ontario. [bleep] dot com and reptilescanada dot com are both good ones, I prefer the latter. Both have classifieds.

I've checked the forum whenever I'm in the market... I havn't come across anything at the right timing, although I do tend to watch whats available, just incase the right deal comes along... I will check out those websites though. Thanks!

mandora Jul 31, 2005 11:38 AM

Wouldn't mind if I could find a cute little female at a decent price... my male would appreciate it too, I'm sure!

No matter how close to the border they are they still have to file CITES and shipping over the border if the canadian where to go down and pick it up he then becomes the exporter and has to fill out his own CITES and that in the US is a 6 month wait and expensive. Most breeders who will ship to Canada have a minimum order of 1K - 3K anyway.

All the breeders in Canada pretty much sell their male normal babies for $75-90. I never heard of anyone asking more.

mandora Jul 31, 2005 12:10 PM

Well, everyone I spoke to (about 5 or 6 people) quoted me $100 or more for a hatchling, price getting progressivly more expensive as the snake got older (understandably). I ended up, with tax, etc, paying $250-something for my yearling male, normal bp. And he was the cheapest I could find, from a reasonable source that I trusted. The only other reasonable snake I could find was an 8 month old female for $400-ish. There's a petstore where I live which offers WC or CH babies for $89, but I'd rather not take a chance on them.

So, I paid $250, And that's without shipping costs, which, had I not been conveniently driving that way anyway and thus could pick him up in person, would have been another $100 .....
Not cheap.

nita Jul 31, 2005 01:17 PM

Males usually don't go up that much in price as they age unless they are a breeder that is carrying a trait, they are usually unneeded, by the breeders. I recently sold 3 males one was a 13yr old male for $100, the other was a 2yr old for $100 and the poss het OG went for $150. All were sold at our last show. Hmmm, your price sounds almost like pet store prices.

Yeah, I know! It's frickin irritating that I can't get a reasonable price.... I'm not being unreasonable I don't think! Just seems to me that paying twice what the animal should reasonably be is a bit stupid. And pet stores are asking the same prices, but for animals with questionable background. I prefer to know the history of the animal, thank you.

I know MarcusJayne had some good prices, but had nothing available for a few months, at the time that I was looking. Plus, they're in southern Ontario, I'm about 8 hours away driving, so I would have to ship, or stay overnight somewhere if I drove to pick it up (that's a looooong drive otherwise) so it's still gonna cost me an arm and a leg.

Sorry, just needed to vent about the crummyness of living far from the centers of civilization.... (or, in Canada, Toronto!(just kidding any West coasters)) I know there's nothing I can do, just needed to complain a bit!
