Feeding RETFs

gbjk Jul 31, 2005 10:30 AM

Two questions about feeding our new RETFS.
They're both young adults (1.5" long), and a few months old.

Everything I read says to feed them every couple of days, and only enough that they'll actually eat it.
However the crickets hide easilly in the moss, and the plants, so knowing if they've eaten what they've been given is hard.

Is 2 crickets per day enough for them?
So I'd put in roughly 8 crickets every couple of days.
Should I allow for crickets never being found or simply dying, and add a couple for that?

Also, what should I do for varying their diets?
The store that had been keeping them recommended just plain crickets, with a dusting once a week.
However all of the books I've got and most of my research says to try and vary their diet a bit.
What else should I be giving them?
We don't get enough houseflies that I can collect for them, and flightless fruit flies are too small for them.
Am I perhaps pampering them too much, and they'd be fine on just the crickets?

Thanks

try getting a smaller tank like a 2.5 gallon and use it as a feeding tank.thats wat i did with my GTF.just keep the crickets in the feeding tank all the time and put the RETF in it and let them eat untilk they dont eat anyomre.then put them in there regular cage.

or take a dish with high sides on it and putt he crickets in it.crickets cant climbv glass but tree frogs can

good luck

I treid the later.
The five crickets (two medium, two small) in the dish didn't get eaten at all overnight.

The frogs didn't move very much overnight, One of them was up for about an hour, before going to sleep.
Didn't see him drinking during that time, though.

The other one moved while I was asleep, so might have had something to drink.

I guess it's possible that they just went back to the same leaves, though.

I hope they're both okay, and just tired.

I'm struggling to keep the humidity down below 80.
Over night it peaked at 82, and stayed that way for a lot of the night.

Using a fan seemed to keep the humidity down, but also dropped the temperature. I'll try that tonight and see if it keeps the humidity down enough.

Put fresh crickets in again tonight, and threw the old ones out.
Thor was eating them by 10pm, and I think Norman had some later.
Then they started chirping - so they must think it's humid enough to be mating season!

New photos as well.

Good to hear they are eating. Remember, frogs dont drink, they absorb water through their skin. And as far as variety in diets try mealworms, waxworms (not too many. they're fatty) fruit flies and a bunch of other stuff. As long as the prey is pesticide free and well gutloaded, the frogs should be well nourished.

Sounds like they're doing ok, though, since they're already calling. Good Job.

Yep - I've taken to referring to their absortion as "drinking" when they're doing it purposefully from a water source ( rather than from the air, or glass ).

The frogs have both got used to us being around, and will now both get up while we're still in the same room, with the room lights on ( But not before the terrarium lights are off ).

If we're not too close ( 2m or further away ) then they'll happily hunt, drink, and scamper on their own.
If we get closer to watch them they'll sit still, or move slowly ( Which is cute to watch, as they seem to think that if they move their little hands slowly enough we won't notice ). Shortly after we move away again they'll recommence with their fun.

They seem to not be distracted or put off by the tv being about a meter from them, with a surround sound speaker even closer.
They'll happily chirp while the tv is on, which surprised me.

All of this at around 9pm!

Gave them their first dusted meal last night, and they both seemed happy with it, and I saw them both dive into the bowl.

Good news. The frogs look great too. Keep up the good work.
