CGD feeding frequency

Kevin Saunders Jul 31, 2005 06:43 PM

Hi, I used to keep a pair of cresteds but sold them and all my other lizards when I started college. I live close enough to come home every weekend, so I was able to keep my snakes since they only eat weekly but I'm in the dorms where no pets are allowed. I'll have an apartment this spring where I can keep a few herps, but anyway I just recently heard of this commercial crested gecko diet and it seems like a very convenient resource. I've already got fruits and baby food and I still have no problem getting occasional crickets but I was wondering how often they need to eat the CGD?

I normally leave home on Sunday evenings and come back early on Friday, so that's 4 days I won't be here to feed one. If my parents would agree to put some fresh CGD in on Wednesday, would that be enough feeding? I saw on Anthony Caponetto's site that his geckos eat the mix for about 48 hours after he gives it to them, so I'm thinking this could work but I wanted to get some opinions before I seriously look into getting another crested. Thanks.

This time of the year, even w/the AC on, the CGD gets moldy after about 24 hours at my house (Wisconsin) or it drys out. Either way they can't or won't eat it after the first night. If you are able to keep your place cool enough, you might have better luck! The air in this climate, even inside my house, is rife with living organisms! I do have better luck in winter holding their food over an extra day, but then their appetites fall off and they rarely eat it all anyway.

Thanks, I guess I better hold off until I'm in the apartment then.
