Rostral Abrasions (Nose Rubbing)

WillHayward Aug 01, 2005 01:28 AM

How are some ways that you prevent this? I have two beardies that have this problem. The run along side the tank brushing their noses, stairing at their reflections.

Tonight I put a fish tank backdrop around it, but It doesn't help all that much.

No, but you may just be able to make out lighter grey tones on the nose where the abrasions are.

I just thought I would show the photo.

Jess,

The reason I am getting worried is because abrasions are starting to show on their nose area.

Dragons do this for alot of reasons, chasing their reflections, because they are bored, they want to come out for awhile, their tank is too small etc. Try putting that fishtank background inside the tank, this way he won't see his reflection in the glass anymore.

Yeah, it defenetly gets them going. Lots of excerise, as if they were dogs chaing their tales.

I will look into the aquarium background, but first I must find a larger tank for them.

All of the above reasons, but especially when the cage is too small. Mine do this sometimes when they want to come out, but not to the extent of causing damage. On a sidenote, you and the dragons would be better off not using gravel as a substrate. Gravel is a big cause of impaction, as it cannot pass through their systems. Non-stick shelf liner, paper towels, reptile carpet, or any other suitable non-particle substrate would be much safer for your dragons and much easier for you to keep clean.

Stare at me with empty eyes and
Point your words at me
Mirror on the wall will show you
What you're scared to see
I can see, yeah, wish I couldn't see at all
I can feel- Wish I couldn't feel at all
Hate to see- Wish I couldn't see at all
Hate to feel- Wish I couldn't feel at all
So climb walls,
Thin my blood now
And I crawl, back to bed now

Yes, I have heard the problem with Gravel, and I will be changing that out when I get a larger tank. Until then it is fine, when they were babies (The Breeder) they lived in sand and I am sure that they have not swallowed any of these stones. They rarely even lie on them, as the prefer numerous other rocks they have.

But as I said before, it is not the size of the tank, They do this ANY time they see their reflections, inside and outside of the tank. I only need to prevent it inside the tank though.

I have been keeping beardies for about 3-4 years now and all of my dragons (big and small) have done this.. my male breeder (soon to be retired) still to this day does it for about 1-2 hours during the morning hours and it isnt because of his tank being too small or his belly being empty so I'm assuming its just them being bored.. It does leave sortof a mark on there nose sometimes, but like I said I never could figure out a way to stop them from doing it and it really has done no long term damage or anything so if anything think of it as a little "jog" while you are at work
