boa constrictor constrictor vs burmese python

bcclover Aug 01, 2005 11:12 AM

i wanted to know whats the difference n keeping burmese pythons than keeping true redtail boas. i have thought of getting a burm but i hear all the stories of people not being able to care for them and selling them. i dont want to do that. so i ask not cause im dumb but because i dont want to make a bad purchase and in the end the animal will lose out. i see big burms but that does help me know what it takes to care for one and how much it might difer from caring for my true redtails.

thank u

oh and if anyone has pics of labyrinths that r 10 feet or more i would love to see the pic

I have both (an RTB, and a Burmese python). I have to say, hands down, the RTB is much, much easier to care for than my burm. But I love them both, and I put every effort into giving each what he/she needs.

You can check out pics of my burm/boa here:

u have some nice snakes there. do u plan on breeding them. the color on that suri is awesome. where did u get her from. also what makes it easier to care for your suriname than your burm.

thank u

Thanks. I don't plan on breeding my pets (I think the market is already flooded with animals that most people just aren't able to properly care for). I got my suri from a reptile exhibition in MA about four years ago (I don't remember exactly which one).

As for her care - let's just say that my burm requires larger, more expensive meals, requires two people to be present when handling, absolutely requires good humidity control, requires a bigger, more spacious enclosure, makes much more of a mess when he defecates/urinates, and requires more attention (he just always seems to want to come out more often). And there are some other, more minor things. Overall, he's just more work and takes more resources.

Others may disagree, but that has been my experience so far.

thanks for all your info. like i said u have one heck of a suri and your burm is awesome too. i currently only have a female peruvian, but plan on getting a suri. i will most likely breed any bcc's i get but if i where to get a burm i wouldnt breed it just for the reason u said. alot of people cant take care of them or get them for the wrong reason. are those the only five snakes u own.

Yes, I have only five snakes. BUT, to me that is too many. I came to have five by a matter of chance, I guess is what you could call it. My intention, over the years, was to have four snakes (which I do have now - in addition to another 'surprise' guest). Here's the catch: when I got the fourth of my snakes I had it shipped to me from a breeder down south. It was the first, and only, time I ever had an animal shipped. I'll never do it again (there's a long story there). The thing I'm getting to is that along with this snake there was a second snake, quite to my surprise, in a second container in the box. I was at a complete loss as to make sense of it. I hadn't asked for the second one, and I hadn't paid for it. I asked for and got a Mexican Black Kingsnake, but I also received an Asian Trinket Ratsnake. The guy who sent it to me claimed that he just likes introducing people to new species. At first I thought he was a real nice guy - but that thought didn't last long. I mean, what kind of business survives by giving away thier product for free? And what kind of business survives by dumping it's product into the hands of customers who neither asked for or wanted it, and who may very well not be able or prepared to keep it? I won't get into what I really think now, because I've already gone off on a tangent here (sorry 'bout that).

So, yes, I have "only" five snakes. Do you have any pics of your peruvian to share?

Sorry, I don't know of anyone selling Surinames, and I honestly don't remember who I got mine from. I guess I just never thought it was important to know that sort of thing. I'll be looking forward to seeing pics of your Peruvian - but it would probably be more appropriate to end this thread for that and post in the boa forum, you know.

your right. hey u should name your labyrinth burm Maze for his pattern. Thats what i would name mine.

petersaloom Aug 02, 2005 01:29 PM

wasn't Theseus the mythological character that slaid the minotaur inside the labyrinth? That may be way too obscure but hey, what the hell.
