First snake (but not first reptile)

amberjo Aug 01, 2005 02:48 PM

As soon as I get out of the dorms (which will be at least another 10 months) I want to get a snake. One of my friends has temporary custody of this perty corn snake and I just fell in love. I've had reptiles before so I am aware of most of the issues in regards to owning them.
The only thing is, I'm a little bit squirmish when it comes to feeding them furry mammals. (I'm a girl, that can be my excuse!) I'm OK with crickets and mealworms and things of that sort, and eggs. What breeds would you suggest.
Oh and I have a 30 gallon glass terrarium.

Here is what I think... Corn snakes very colorful, docile, great eaters, meduim size and great eaters!.. but isnt my favorite snake... ball pythons and everglades rat snakes are great to.. my favorite snake though is a pueblan milk snake... colorful, and only about 3 foot at tops... most people are gonna say there aggressive and musk alot, but i have had about 12 in my life and not one was skittish at all... and another of my favorite and is actually cooler then the pueblan is the western hognose snake... small, up turened snout.. can be hard to get to eat as hatchlings, but once they start feeding there is no stop... I hope this helps.... just keep in mind those snakes...

here are some more to look into..

california kingsnake

kenyan sand boa

rosy boa

smaller snakes that dont eat mice and eats worms ect...

ringneck snakes

worm snakes

their are a few snakes you could keep without feeding them mice or furry animals.garter and water snakes can be fed with fish(live or frozen).brown snakes can live on worms or slugs throughout their lives.rough green snakes feed on crickets.these are just a few choices.hope this helps

animals when they are alive. You can buy frozen mice and then thaw them out. Somehow not ever seeing the mice alive helps. We used to have pet rats and we also had rodent eating snakes. We always bought our frozen mice/rats at shows or online, so it seems that there was no connection with those little guys of our. Think of it as a butcher shop or the meat department at the supermarket. We certainly couldn't eat Babe or Bambi, but we certainly eat bacon, venison (well, not us), and hamburgers.
