Just stumbled across this forum and thought I'd share something that may be relevant to some of you.
I recently got some snakes sent to my local airport via Delta. Great. Safe, legal, all should be good.
When I got to the airport the desk informed me that they knew my package contained live animals but that it had been put "on the wrong part of the plane", presumably not the temp controlled part. They instructed me to open and inspect the package. I asked what recourse I would have had if the snakes had died... I told her the value of the shipment and she told me that "the way your package was sent, the maximum liability on our end is $750". Now this was $1000 worth of snakes and it turned out that they were indeed ok but I never thought to ask the shipper about just such a scenario. That could have been a $20,000 snake and I would have been out $19,250 through no fault of my own or the shipper!
I don't know if there is an additional fee of some sort but the moral of the story is ask how much you really are covered for BEFORE there's a problem.
