Scale rot

ladywhipple02 Aug 01, 2005 03:25 PM

What does scale rot look like... any pics? And if a BP has scale rot, what are some things you can do to help treat it?

My BP has some discolored belly scales that are a rusty color around the rims of the scales. They also look dry compared to the shininess of his other scales. He is in a 25 gallon tub with Aspen bedding, and an undertank heater, plus a red bulb on him to help with ambient temps. The aspen isn't damp at all... This little guy is an adoption and has been through some rough times... just want him to have the best. Thanks for any thoughts and opinions. And if it gets any worse, yes, I will take him to the vet.

Almost sounds like he's in shed...but better safe than sorry.

Here is a rescue that I got earlier this year that had some scale rot. It can get real bad and pretty easy to get rid of if you catch it early.

To treat - you have to clean the enclosure - if they are soaking you need to remove the water bowl - treat it with hydrogen peroxide or antibacterial wash and neosporin - keep them nice and dry they will heal and shed off in no time.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Tosh. I've cleaned out his cage and did the HP Neosporin... his scales have the same coloration as yours, but not the white bubbles. Maybe he isn't that far along? In any case, thanks for the advise!
