Trying to identify this snake

bobnjac Aug 01, 2005 05:17 PM

We bought a new snake last week and the guy told us it's a Brooks King snake, but after looking at pictures online it doesn't look like a Brooks and it acts a lot different than our California King. It strikes at us and shakes it's tail like a little rattlesnake. Here's a picture I took ... anyone recognize what it might be?

It definately is a Brooks. As for the tail rattling, many colubrids exhibit this behavior when they feel threatened/are scared. Instinct tells baby snakes that there are many things that would like to snack on them--thus the tail rattling.

Give your baby time to settle in, making sure that it has secure hides. Then try offering a food item. If this goes well, begin short, gentle handling sessions. Once your baby comes to trust that it isn't a food item, you hopefully will see the more friendly aspects of it's personality. Best of luck!

Rgds,
althea
