How do you have him set up? From my experience with timorensis, is that they like to climb, have lots of little places to wedge, and can consume prey like no tomorrow. Offer him mice. My male eats small adult mice all the time. For one your size, offer fuzzies. Some prefere mice over insects. Chances are, hes just not happy with his cage. Once he adjusts and starts feeding, he should accept anything you throw in there.

i dont think he is big enought o eat fuzzies yet from snout to vent he is only about 5 inches , i have some leafy fake vines that hang from one side of the top of his cage down to the other, the back wall is fake rock made from styrofoam with a cement like coat over it to make it water proof and more reolistic looking, and i have a lage basking rock that sits up goes about 2/3 up the cage in one corner he weges himself behind all the time and i have a flat reqtangular rock in another corner for him to wedge ehing but he doesnt seem to like that one, and im useing a cypress mulch for substrate cuz it keeps the humidity well, do you think i should change to dirt? so he may burrow the first few nights i had him he would barry himself in the mulch, do yuo have any pics of your setup i may see to get a better idea of how to set him up better

ok i got some etter measurements of him this morning,
snout to vent 6 1/4 inch, overall length 13 inch, and just behind his eyes he is about 1/2 inch

The mulch is fine. Dirts fine. Whatever you want to use. Boys are easy to accomodate.

With your "basking post," try and make it as multideminsional as possible. Think of a pile of debris that you would find lizards in out in a feild. Have you ever see a lizard out laying on a single flat rock in the middle of nowhere? NOWAY! He wants to have the option of disappearing to a lower level if its too hot out in the open, or if he starts feeling like theres predators about.

Now apply this to you cage. How can you recreate a similar environment? You can go find a bunch of logs and whatnot and just throw them in there. Maybe buy a few nice slabs of corkwood and put that in there too, to give some flat levels to work with. Just give em lots of options to choose from. Make it a very wide pile, so part of it is under the light, and part isnt.

Im actually im the process of changing my timors over to a more vertically oriented enclosure. Im anxious to see how they respond.

As far as mice. Buy a fuzzy. See what he thinks of it. You may be surprised.
After all, fuzzies are about the same size as large crix when you think about it. Theyre just a bit more substantial.

Ill get pics up as soon as i find my camera adapter.

yea im going to go get some more rocks and branches today, maybe i will through some vine type things in there , giveing him more climbing space, i think im going to put some of that woven bambooo matts on the walls so that will also give him some more climbing area, i cant wait till he gets bigger and i can build him a super cool cage !!!!!!

Good thinking about the mats! Good stuff.

well how long does it usually take for them to adjust to there new cage, i have had him since the 30th and all he does is hide behind his rocks or barry himself in his bedding, i have only seen him drink once i havent seen him eat, i gave him a 15 minute bath today in some shallow 90 degree f water i try to spend 10 to 20 minutes a day holding him to try to get him to calm down ut he doesnt seem to want to , what humidity level should i kep him at and temp gradient , i dont think i have him hot enough maybe thats it, he is in a 18',18',18' cage with a 65 watt dayglow bulb

Do you reach in and pick him up to measure him? soak him? etc. He is probably just scared.

If you have him in an aquarium or aquarium type cage with no privacy, he will never relax. Cover the sides and don't mess with him for a couple of weeks. When you do look at him, move very slowly and talk softly.

I had one that after it got used to its enclosure it would sit next to the window and look out at me and the dogs & cat. It was so cool. I never touched it much, but it was fun to watch. The cage was a custom wood 4x4x2 cage with plexiglass doors on the front. He had plenty of climbing and hiding room. He was pretty comfortable but still flighty.

kevwat87 Aug 04, 2005 04:35 PM
