What happened??

Lydia_C Aug 01, 2005 07:13 PM

One of my beardies--the biggest (about 10 inches total length) showed no signs of parasites, his feces looked fine, he was defecating regularly, had no outer wounds and no signs of illness. I was at the tank looking at him sitting in the his basking spot happy as ever and 30 minutes later I went back to the tank and he was dead. The only odd behavior that I had noticed is that he was sitting with his mouth open alot recently. Can anyone give me any answer or possible answer as to what happened?

Excessive gaping is usually caused by either a respiratory infection, or being too hot. If it was respiratory, it's usually accompanied by a popping or a slight wheezy sound. What were the temps in your tank...and how did you measure them?

Stare at me with empty eyes and
Point your words at me
Mirror on the wall will show you
What you're scared to see
I can see, yeah, wish I couldn't see at all
I can feel- Wish I couldn't feel at all
Hate to see- Wish I couldn't see at all
Hate to feel- Wish I couldn't feel at all
So climb walls,
Thin my blood now
And I crawl, back to bed now

only way to really find out what happened, is get a necropsy done. Just refrigerate the body (do not freeze) and arrange with a vet to do it. It typically doesn't cost very much.

There really isn't a way for any of us to know what happen without knowing the history of the dragon and care info.
