Yearling, Hendry county Florida.
Big male, Palm Beach county Florida with a belly full of rat. Nothing like a big ole king with an appetite
Phil
Man, that thing is a brute! Personally, I like the normal Florida kings. I'm assuming he's considered a normal.

I think he is about as normal as they come Tim! Phil
Beautiful snakes Phil! In the first pic, how long is that yearling? About 30 inches? Any other pics would be awesome!
Nice. Look me up next spring and we will go find some of these. I know some great spots.
From what I understand you found the mamma of the snake in the first pic. It came my way courtesy of Sean. I might be game for another foray into the cane fields. Love that place
Maybe we can get Sean to join us and maybe Dick? That would be a good time for sure! It would be fun to hit the field with you old school Florida herpers. Phil
I spent countless hours in those cane fields when in high school and then even afterwards. I never got tired of seeing a nice king crawling through the grass.
If that yearling is from one of the ones I caught last year with Sean, then it was from Palm Beach County. We didn't make it over to Hendry.
More like about 5 miles W of South Bay, Florida.
Glad you said that. Sean told me it was near Clewiston in Hendry county. Thanks for clarifying. The big male is one we found over at South Bay on the same day. Phil
My mistake Phil. I apologize. When I was down there, I thought we were in Hendry County. But after looking at a map, I realize we were in Palm Beach County, BTW, here's a pic of Carl right after he found one of those females. Not sure if it's the one you got but it could be. Hope you don't mind Carl.

It's interesting to see how high the grass was where we were walking. I still can't believe Carl spotted those kings. But then again, he did that for years and knows how to find them.

...just seems so weird to me. Out of 50 or so kings I've found down there, only 4 were spotted without flipping, and 2 of those were half under a piece of trash.
Do some research. The folks that used to collect them and still know how to walked those canal banks. I was more than impressed when Carl pulled two females from the grass not even 8 minutes after getting out of the car! Trash spots are good but there are certainly other methods.

Sean,
Be grateful your circumstances allow you to get out in the field!!! I appreciate and miss my time in the field but with a 400 Church to serve 24/7 and an 11 year-old son who is autistic the best I can do to satisfy a love for Herps is read and breed morphs beside the locale animals I keep and will breed!!!! Don't assume because one isn't out whackin' the weeds that it's a preference thing to stay home. And by the way, the "purest of them all" is my boss--Jesus Christ!!! Shalom y'all
Pat
I am also, obviously computer challenged as the previous post should be in response to the previous thread, Phil, from down below... Sorry
Pat
It isn't hard to find the kings in an area where they are superabundant. The next time you go there I can pretty much bet that you will find them too. Its great to see a small patch of shiney scales down in the grass.
But the neatest way to find them is when you are walking (shuffling) through the weeds and think you feel something way down under the grass. Most of the time it is an old stalk of cane way down there. But then, sometimes you reach down and feel with your hands and find a five foot king.
Now that is cool!
Wish I could have found one like that Carl. Maybe next time.

Thats good stuff. It shows the habitat, the snake, the herper and the method used. It don't get much better than that. Phil
No it doesn't! Makes me want to get back down there
