First Hognose and I have some questions....

Turtlequest Aug 01, 2005 10:49 PM

This is my first snake. I have turtles, lizards, frogs, now i'm ready to venture into snakes (Western Hog). I have some handling questions.

How do i know when its ok to pick up my hognose? I know not to handle it for about two days after it eats. I want to feed it outside its tank until it gets a little bigger. How can I pick it up after it eats without getting bit to put it back into its tank? If its puffing and rattling, do I still go after it, and try to pick it up?

Thanks.

You can pick it up if it's puffing. 99% of the time they are bluffing and will not bite, and even if they do go to strike they usually won't even open there mouth. Biting is one of the last things to worry about with hognoses.
