cool side temps

halebop Aug 02, 2005 06:22 PM

i have 1 leo in a 20 gallon long. her warm side is 87 degrees at substrate level. how cool should the cool side be? it was 73.8 yesterday which seemed too cold (maybe not?)

she spends nearly all of her time on the warm side of the tank. is that typical or is it b/c the cool side is too cold for her?

I don't think it's too cool. Do you have a hide over there? Maybe your leo doesn't feel secure on the cool side.

thanks - i do have a hide on the cool side but she spends nearly all of her time in the hide on the warmer end. she'll walk around a bit each night and comes out to drink but most of her time is on the warm end in that hide.

If your Leo is always at the warm end, it may need to be warmer. Try raising the warm end temp a few degrees each day and see if your Leo starts alternating between the warm end and the middle area. I read on one website they like the warm end temps 90 to 92. Basically you just want to raise the temps gradually until your Leo moves between the zones. Make sure you have a thermostat too! You can get one at reptiledepot.com for alot less than anywhere else. I got for my new corn snake enclosure and it works great!

Without a temperature gradient and a warm side of at very least 88 F, leopard geckos cannot maintain their immune sytems, their metabolisms, or digest food properly. This also leaves them susceptible to parasites and systemic infections.

Raise the temps and yes, a thermostat is an excellent idea!

i have a temperature gradient and the warm end is 87-88 degrees. i've recently bumped it up a bit at a time on the warm end and she's a lot more active and now uses the whole tank. the warm end is up to 92. i had thought that was a bit too hot but she seems happier than when it was 88. i'll get the thermostat this weekend but does anyone think keeping the warm end up to 92 is too hot? she seems at her best.

72-76 F....or so on the cool side is fine. Mine gets hotter sometimes and my crew is just fine.
