new corn baby, just a couple questions

bigmandan Aug 02, 2005 07:06 PM

this is my first snake and just want to make him/her happy with the
setup i have.. basically i have a 10 gal tank with a heat lamp 60 watt bulb that i keep on during the day, and a under tank heater that sticks to the bottom of the tank. both are on the same side of the cage and i keep the heat pad on all day..my big question is how
do i set it up so i have the right temp at both sides of the cage at all times, right now it is approx 75 degrees on the cool side is
this ok, any suggestions, tips, stuff like how long to keep the lamp/heating pad on, also the best way to position everything in a 10 gal tank so it works...and how do i get him to come out of his hiding spot he is in there literally all day long lol... any suggestions would be great thank you

the 10 gallon tank is a good size for babies. they don't like or need a hugh enclosure at first. the UTH's are meant to stay on 24/7 but should have a control devise so they don't get so hot. if you can not hold your hand on the glass its to hot for the snake.
75 degrees on cooler side sounds fine to me. i have a baby in a 20 gallon long with an UTH and thats it. she is doing great. here in the south west deserts its hot enough so don't need to provide extra heating. we keep our room temp around 76-77 anyways. i think the 60 watt light over a 10 gallon tank might be to hot but if your going to use it its easiest to plug it into a timer so they can have a night time. i set mine to the sun rise/set times. be sure your measureing the temps on the bottom...where the snake is.
babies hide becasue that is what natural instint tells them to do. its normal. as yours get older and bigger he/she will come out more often.
a hide place on both sides of the tank is good. i use paper towel rolls and little band aid boxes. they don't like a big hide. just big enough for them to squeeze into. plus water bowl.
its best to let him alone for a week or so to get settled into his new home. also best to not handle right after feeding..suggested wait time is 24-48 hours.
this is just my experiences enjoy and be prepared to get hooked!!
p.s. your photos didn't show up.
