i've got the pair in, and aside from some snout rub on the female, they're perfect! vet appointment is tomorrow...things are going well. still not feeding yet, but their weight is good so i'm not too worried yet. they're the best condition i've ever seen imported animals in. i'm really very excited to add them to the family.

hay bro you know we all want to see some pics of your new little guys !!!!!!

luvsnail99 Aug 06, 2005 12:25 PM

no pics yet; we're in the middle of a move. we should be set up at the new house by the beginning of next week, so hopefully after that i'll get some photos posted.
the vet gave the animals high marks; they really are great looking critters. we got them their second hit of worming meds, and they go back in two weeks for a checkup. the only fly in the ointment is that i still haven't gotten them to feed. i'm trying again today after they settle down from the vet visit.

the male fed this afternoon while we were taking a load of stuff to the new house. i put up blinders around the basking area, so the female won't feel exposed and might come out of her hide spot. the male could care less, he's rather bold...drilled 7 pinkies. soon as we move, i'm seperating the pair; i can't tell who's eating what and they're not calm enough to tong feed yet. the pair weighed out at 195g for the male, and 155 for the female. what i wish i could have taken pictures of was the vet and his techs...none of them had ever seen a tree monitor. they really got a kick out of the monitors. i'm just glad they're calm for monitors...i'd never have been able to restrain the V. niloticus i used to keep for a vet visit...He was an evil tempered beast.

later folks,

yea v.niloticus is a rather aggrssive species at the least, i tink it is one of the worst monitors available in the pet trade and wouldnt ever recomend it to anyone except the most expirienced keepers, but all in all i guess its just the animal cuz i kow a lady who has a 5 footer thats just like a giant baby, i guess its all about how much time you have to work with it and if you got a decent tempered one,

luvsnail99 Aug 07, 2005 08:01 PM

i had plenty of time to work with them. they were both wild-caught-imported-as-babies so they didn't start with the most pleasant dispositions. the older male calmed to the point where you didn't have to armor up to do cage cleaning, but the younger one was completely evil. i have to agree with you: experienced keepers only, with lots of time, space and money. i ended up giving the pair to a good friend that raised pythons. after my daughter was born i didn't have the time to take care of them properly. the last time i was back in town to visit, Zuul was over five feet, and still unpleasant.

yea especially with a new born baby around i would be too afraid one would get out and well who knows what i just wouldnt want them around with a little kid thats all curiouse and stuff, ut thats what locks are for i guess, but then again there is alwase human error and a really determined monitor that will want to get out
