Wild boxie laying eggs ....

FloridaHogs Aug 03, 2005 12:20 PM

This beautiful girl decided to lay eggs under my kids slide last summer. She laid a total of 4. I decided to leave them (since at the time I new nothing about incubation) and put up some wire and such to protect the nest from predation. Unfortunately, the wire did not protect from Hurricane Ivan, so the whole nest was lost due to flood issues. I thought you might enjoy the pic though.

Sorry I cleaned out my pics and that one must have been in the wrong folder.

I wish I found box turtles in my backyard.

FloridaHogs Aug 07, 2005 10:49 PM

Not found in my backyard, but my parents. I rescued her from their dogs, and released her in my backyard ( I live by a retention / wooded area). She hung around a few days, laid her eggs, then took off. She took my 3 footed male with her. Also a road side rescue. Such is life. I am just glad they hung around as long as they did. Being adults, I felt more secure about letting them roam in the back. However, I would never consider doing so with the baby Gulf Coast Boxie we pulled out of the middle of the highway. To many loose cats around here. We have had her 2 1/2 years. She prefers my daughter over everybody else, and is very shy.
