Pet shop question

snake_girl85 Aug 03, 2005 07:13 PM

I work at a small local pet shop, and we got 2 malis in about a week ago... I have no idea if they were wild caught or not, as they're tame but large, and usually we get babies in. We've got an approx. 12 inch female, and a ~9 inch (appears to be) male, and they both came to us (surprise surprise) pretty skinny. The female's appetite has improved considerably and she's a big porker now, but the male is still rather scrawny (especially compared to her, lol). I've only seen him eating from their dry dish, and I don't know if he's eating many (if any) greens. He acts fairly healthy, he's just skinnier than I'd prefer him to be.
Anyway, my question is: even though there's been absolutely NO sign of aggression between the two (he sometimes sleeps on top of her!), and she in no way appears to be dominating/protecting the food dish, is it possible that the mere presence of a larger lizard in a relatively small enclosure might be stressing him out to the point of altering his eating habits? I'm a Uro lover and like to spoil them, just wanted to see if there's anything I could do

OT, here's the latest Goober picture, almost a year old and still as fat as ever!

It is possable but he may also be dehydrated or parasitic. If he is dehydrated the dry mix is a bad thing for him to be eating, it could lead to impaction. Is he pooping? I know it maybe hard to tell with both of them together. If it were me I would seperate them if possable and give him a shallow bowl of water. He may drink from it or he may not. With mine I had to let them soak in the tub with a 1/4" of warm/hot water. They would drink nearly imediately. For what seemed like 20-30 seconds. After about 5-10 min they would poo and that would be that. I would put water in the enclosure for them daily also. If he is parasited a fecal would need to be done to determine exactly what and what meds. Try giving him warm peas, green beans to eat or dandelion flowers. You can give him romaine lettuce to help get him hydrated. Fruit also is helpful be it blue berries, straw berries, water melon, apple, pear just not citrus and no seeds or peal. Apricot or vegatables and turkey baby food is another.
