need another 8 degrees on the basking site

flooberyroobins Aug 04, 2005 05:29 PM

I'd like the basking site to be about 8 degrees hotter....right now I'm using an 8 inch aluminum reflector and a plain old "household" 75 watt bulb....
should I raise the basking site? or should I use a higher wattage bulb? or should I change to a different type of bulb?

Need more info:

1) What species is this for?

2) Describe the cage it is currently in. Size, material, amount and placement of the ventilation. Also, how the cage is furnished.

3) Are the rest of the temps in the cage fine save for the basking spot?

got the basking spot where I want it... but the cool end is too cool...
there is no animal in the enclosure yet.
it is 3x2x2
the sides top, and back are covered with a shower stall type paneling, sealed in the edges. The front is plexi. There is a dirt/sand mixture substrate ranging from about 4 inches deep to about a foot deep under the basking spot. there are a row of 1/8 inch holes about halway up the hot side (just above the level of the dirt, theres another row of 1/8 inch holes along the top edge of the cool side.
there are two 8.5 inch aluminum reflectors on top, each with a 100 watt halogen flood. Basking spot is 128, the cool end is 79.5 humidity is 74 percent.
I'd like to get the cool end upto about 85
I can't figure out why these two 100 watters are only getting the cool end up to 79. The room its in is between 65 - 70

Increase the thermal mass in the cage. I put a large rock under the basking area of one of my cages and it increased the temps at the cool end by quite a bit.
