Herping trip to Eastern Washington: Vantage and Potholes Reservoir

C. Elmer Jul 16, 2003 05:58 PM

Hi all,

Making a trip to Eastern Washington next week, wanted some suggestions. Pretty much the focus of the entire trip will be North Pacific rattlers and gopher snakes. I've already got my whole trip pretty much planned out, but wanted some info on a couple of places I'd like to try visiting but haven't been before. One is Vantage, where I-90 crosses the Columbia. I hear this can be a good hot spot; anyone have any specific directions as far as where to get off, etc., around this area?

Secondly I want to visit potholes reservoir. Anyone have any suggestions about this spot? Would the northern part be best, with all it's little islands, or should I travel to the southern part where potholes state park is?

Any info/experiences on these two locations would be most appreciated. Thanks,

-Christian-

Hi,

For Gopher Snake, Lower Crab Creek Road can be good. In fact, many of the side roads west of Othello and near Royal City should be decent.

This season, I have seen three Great Basin Gophers within a mile of our house (Spokane). One juvenile was in our secondary garage!

I've only seen rattlers up in Northrup Canyon (well north of the potholes), but I know they occur in Columbia NWR and the habitat around Vantage looks good.
