Rattlesnake removal

bthacker Aug 04, 2005 08:07 PM

I was driving home today from work and noticed a red truck with advertising for rattlesnake removal. I pulled up and honked, asked him what he does with the snakes and he said that he relocates them. I live in California and since I was a kid have seen the encraochment on to wild areas at a rapid rate, including where I live presently. Obviously there is nothing we can do about but I was thinking about this relocation business. I have read in places that the relocated animals don't fare very well and do not successfully adjust to their new surroundings. I hate to say it but if that's the case a swift death would be better than a slow one. Question I have is, has there been any research on this and to what extent has it been researched? I would like to know if any radio tracking has been done in conjuction with someone moving more than just one specimen.

Any direction to some research findings would be appreciated. I also would like to hear opinions.

Take care-

Brett

Hey Brett, this is Brett, nice to see you spell it the right way! Yes there have been several studies, none here in CA but the Sonoran Desert Museum has some of the most recent/ongoing studies with this topic.
Cheers

I found this. http://www.venomousreptiles.org/articles/18

Interesting stuff. I wonder if the guy I saw with the business of rattlesnake removal practices the SDT's or LDT's?
