Looking for a great herp camera!

dmlove Aug 05, 2005 10:45 AM

I know I have been on here before, thinking I would possibly get this camera or that camera, but the money has not been that available for me,lol. Here are my "specifications" if you will:

I have an Olympus D-550 Zoom 3.0 Megapixel camera. I do not know much if any about SLR's or DSLR's. I hope to do lots of nice nature shots, mainly of herps and or birds, some mammals, plants, and landscapes. My preferred price range is $300.00 and under (possibly $350.00). I want one that is hardy enough to withstand some weather. I want one that will show very clear images, especially in macro mode. If it is an DSLR, thats fine, as long as its relatively simple to use! I know I know...I just described my ideal camera and there isnt one out there that fits all of this AND in my price range, but any input is appreciated!

David

Clints - Yeah, I read the whole forum looking for some tips, and it helped me narrow it down, but some of my requirements were not met, and the price ranges were different.

Thanks!

I know myself being a newbie to digital cameras is very confusing. If it wasn't for the folks here i'd probably be talking with some clerk from best buy, who knows what i'd have bought then. The sony dsc-h1 was mentioned in one of the threads. It is a little beyond your price range if you by it at best buy or someplace similar. If you check out e-bay you might find one within your price range. I spent last sunday at e-bay checking prices, when it is time to get my camera that is where i'll make my purchase. Goodluck to you, Clint

You won't find many SLRs or DSLRs for your price range mostly. The only option I can give you to consider is the SLR I used for years before I got my Sony F828. I have a Minolta Vectis S-100. It was cheap when it was new (body and lens $200). It's ideal for field work: limited buttons, small size, light weight, and the ONLY SLR I'm aware of that was weatherproof. That's right! And boy did I ever test that out. All doors have gaskets and even the lenses were weatherproof. Drawbacks is that it uses the APS film system, and lenses are specialized to that line of cameras, so you can really only buy the Minolta lenses. However, this camera and lenses are really cheap on ebay right (get body and couple of lenses for $100 I'm sure). When you get the film developed simply ask for a cd.
