Have any of you ever tried this?
I discovered early on when we first took in the sulcata tortoise 3 years ago that she loves to be given a vigorous shell rub. She'll dance when she wants one, if she's not in the mood for it though she has no reaction.
Then I saw someone do the same to a RES on AP's Funniest Animal Videos, the RES danced like the tortoise does so I decided to try it with the boxies.
Shell E hates it, Charity seems to kind of like it but hasn't totally decided one way or the other yet, it kind of freaks her out. I can't get that close to Hobo but Janie oh my gosh, she LOVES it like the tortoise does.
If I rub Janie's shell she'll move closer to me then stand up as tall as she can & just enjoy it.
They are such amusing pets!

Morris, my eastern box, enjoys shell and head rubs. While he doesn't dance he will hold his head out as long a I will continue rubbing it and will kick his feet when I "tickle" his shell.

Destiny is my only one to dance for rubdowns. That's neat Morris likes it too.
Shell E likes her legs rubbed, just not her shell.
Destiny actually likes her head rubbed if you touch her head from behind & she doesn't see your hand coming towards her.
They're such individuals, they're all just awesome.

Oh, now Morris hates having his legs touched. I almost forgot, he also likes having the bottom side of his neck stroked.

My RES useto love having his neck stroked. Sadly I stoped handling him and he hates humans again lol.

This is amazing... I will have to see how robbie (my box) likes it.

Your RES actually allowed that? My western painted is worse than Hobo the box turtle with that alpha male 'tude of his. I can't touch his skin at all or ELSE ROFL!!
His name is Fluffy, I've always said I should've named him Bluffy because he thinks he's that baaadest dude on the planet.
He'll BEG for food when he's in his tank, act like Mr. Adorable who deserves treats but out of the tank that mouth is always open ready to bite. He cracks me up.

Hey if you try this with Robbie the box, let us know how it goes.
Like I said until we took in the tortoise & I discovered that she likes this it had never occurred to me to try it with the boxies, I was really surprised to find 2 of them like it.

Destiny enjoys having the bottom of her neck stroked but I have to admit I haven't tried that with the boxies. I'll have to give it a whirl. With Destiny I have to be very careful because if something frightens her & I get my finger trapped when she closes up I'm going to have a broken finger. EEK!
How funny that Morris hates having his legs touched yet Shell E holds hers out so that I can massage them. I think that's why she doesn't fight when her nails need trimming.

Shell E doesn't mind the top of her head being rubbed, Destiny is ok with the dog kissing the top of her head, Shell E of course HATES that lol.
Hobo, that alpha boy who thinks he's baaaad lol is warming up to me. He recognizes me as the giver of food but of course he already knew that since he's been coming here for years for free meals but now he is beginning to come after me when he wants some. But I think it's going to be another year or 2 before he's ok with me touching him.
