And the hatching begins... *pics*

Kestrel Jul 16, 2003 06:49 PM

Well, day 60, and the first baby has left the egg, with no warning at all. LOL. Checked the incubator last night. Wake up, and there's a baby with several others pipping already. I must be doing something right. Every single clutch of colubrid eggs i've ever had start hatching on day 60 exactly. Anyhow, This first baby shows alot of promise. Straight out of the egg, he has a bright yellow face and neck, much like dad. I'm extremely excited to see how these turn out.

So far, 2 out of the egg. 4 more breathing air..

Look at that yellow little face. I can't wait to see these guys after a few sheds. Definatly am going to keep one to see how they turn out. Second baby out is HUGE! Whats the average size of taiwan hatchlings??

In answer to your question, Schulz ('96) said the hatchlings varied bt. 30 and 45 cm, but the smaller ones were probably for the smallest ssps, like t. taeniura. The largest ones probably included t. friesi, and that's near 18 inches. I'd say an ave. would probably be bt. 16 and 18 inches, big babies.

My question is, "What is the white, powdery stuff bt. the scales on their faces?" Is it from the incubation medium (perlite?) Just curious about that, thanks.

Those are great pics, K. You've a good eye for photography. Keep it up

oh ok.. So they're about average then. I've only ever seen chinese hatchlings..

As for the white stuff, I took those pics right after it had emerged from the egg.. Its prolly dried egg gunk combined with perlite dust..

And thanks.
