probing in at 5 scales

jonf Aug 05, 2005 06:24 PM

I have a 2000 gram snake that probes at 5 scales. I've read just about everything there is on probe depths, and have come to the conclusion that this is leaning towards a female. I'm sure there is a story or two in this forum about males probing at shallow depths and females probing deep. Not being an experienced breeder, I have nothing to compare too. But am I safe to assume that this is a female?

if it probes at 5 scales on each side of the vent, then chances are it is definately a female.

I have never had a male probe shallow, but I have had females probe deep. I have one that is 5 on one side and 7 on the other.

Would it be safe to say that if you're unsure of the sex to go ahead and put a known male in with he/she to find out?

checked for sperm plugs? If this is an adult animal and is male, this should be a fairly easy check. But don't just stop checking after the first time you find nothing. Sometimes they are "dry".

from correctly sexing a snake. I think I've read that before somewhere. Jay, I've seen pics of sperm plugs in the forum but I've never attempted check myself. Are there any websites or literature that explain how check or is it something that should be left to experienced breeders? Thanks

Not sure. Checking for sperm plugs is similiar to "popping". You should be shown how it's done so you don't injure the animal.
