I must say my friend, that alligator's just don't die for no reason. If he was acting healthy (eating, active, aggressive, etc) then my guess is that there was something wrong internally with him. When was your last vet check?

This is a guess.

If he was entirely healthy maybe he had a defect? Humans sometimes have brain anurisms(sp?), small hearts, etc....

Maybe it was just a fluke, it happens with people I imagine other animals have such things. Maybe an autopsy could reveal a cause.

Often times, when they die 'suddenly' for no apparent reason, is due to food rotting in their belly due to water being too cold, or the enclosure.

Was he always eating with a good appetite? Was he lethargic?
If you want, have a vet check him out so that the same won't happen to the female (who by the way, you should have checked by a vet, as with any ewly acquired animal one gets).
