open sore & need help

faerie822 Aug 06, 2005 02:02 AM

i took my (american) toad out today, originally because her eyes looked kinda weird. she has black triangles on the sides of her pupils that i cant remember being there before, but that mightve just been me not being very observant. she is a very dark brown now, where she used to be middle brown w/a little reddish yellow, but that might be because she spends most of the time buried. but she has what looks like an open sore on her back. i have no idea where this came from, i dont take her out, for obvious reasons, & ive been out of town the last 5 days, so i couldnt even say how long its been there. her behavior is kind of unusual too, lately, according to what my mom told me, while i was out of town. she said shed water her & 5 minutes later have to water her again, & repeat several more times. today, i had the same problem, shes never done this before. help, please, my vet isnt in on the weekends, can anyone give me an idea what to treat this with, theories on whats happening, anything at all...? im desperate. she was also rasing her head like she was gulping or trying to swallow, when i was looking at her.

ill post a pic as soon as i can.

bad pics but the best of what i could get, i saw a bug crawling on her a few minutes ago when i went in to get these, could they be a bug bite of some sort? if so, what can i treat it with until i can get to the vet? in all honesty, & i hope im wrong, i dont think shes gunna make it. help needed fast, please.

another thing, i took her out of the tank & put her in a tupperware box w/wet paper towels & a water bowl, since the bug was in her tank, im going to change all the bedding today (its 330am.) the wound looks wet, like its weeping, maybe. i dont know what is ok to treat animals with, i have some povidone iodine solution in the basement, & triple antibiotic ointment (neosporin) but im not going to put anything on it until i find out what is safe.

i work at a petstore and often, we use neosporin on reptiles with sores and wounds. Bactoderm is good for reptiles as well. consider taking him to the vet though.

since no one has any ideas, let me ask something else. does dropsy cause external wounds? because she seems to be swollen & in readings came across dropsy being severe bloating of the abdomen, but shes always been fat so im not sure if im just paranoid. really needing help, cant get to the vet until my off day this week, & since ive been on vacation i dont even know what day that is yet, or if the herp vet will even be in then...thanks.

toads generally bloat themselves out to make themselves look bigger when scared, nervous, or threatend. generally when you touch a toad they will do this. I doubt its anything for you to be worried about, i would get that open sore looked at though...
