Frog identification, from AZ desert

cluteman Aug 06, 2005 02:48 AM

Can anyone help identify these frogs? I live in Phoenix, AZ, so they would have to put up with the heat (upwards of 110F and mild humidity). We had a big rain storm recently that probably pushed them out of a wash nearby. The wash has grass, rock, and very few trees.

Thanks! :D

I would say probably the Great Plains Toad. Looks very similar and is native to the area. Go ahead and check out the Field Guides at a local bookstore. Peterson's Reptiles and Amphibians is a good one (make sure you look at the "Western" edition). I know Barne's and Noble has them. Plus it's a good thing to have to figure out what everything is down here in the desert.

Yeah, I would have to agree that it looks like Bufo cognatus (Great Plains Toad), as it has the light dorsal stripe, but lacks the prominent cranial crests that appear in the similar species Bufo Woodhousii.
