New Somali pair!

flbriaz Aug 06, 2005 09:41 AM

My new pair... I get them for the week of quarantine and then i get to choose one. I can't choose; they're both so cool! My boyfriend gets whatever one i don't want; he's so sweet.

We named the female, Chubby Lumpikins. We have yet to name the male...

It looks to me like you have a male macfadyeni and maybe a female geyri (the large one, maybe a mali).
You'll notice how the feet are grossly different proportions between the two and the center spikes of the tail are more depressed on the macfadyeni than the geyri. The base of the tail is totally different between the two- wide versus narrow.
Somali females do not look like that.

Ah, that's what my boyfriend was thinking... Hrm... At any rate we bought them at discount prices because the store had them for 8 months and he made a low offer.

Oh and i did notice the leg thing. His legs and toes are much longer, as is his tail and the center rows or spikes are flatter... At least we know now. I love being able to get advice and insight from all of you, thanks!

yeah, i think that one is a mali, it looks like it has the short stubby tail of a mali. she does look nice and healthy. the little boy looks like he could use a few extra meals
are you only quarentining for a week?

Yes they're away from our others; though, they've always been together. The store said he's always been that skinny and she's always been that fat. I'm going to try to fatten him up with peas, dark greens and i need to go buy a hibiscus plant. I just moved so it may take a few weeks or so before i can go get one, $$$...

you might want to quarentine them more than a week, you never know what they could have encountered at the pet store. i quarentined hugo for two months, even after a vet visit because i was afraid something may not have shown up yet. if the boy has always been that skinny i would get a fecal done on him to make sure he does not have parasites. have you thought of a name yet?

no name yet... The boyfriend wanted to name him Chili, but i think of reds like a chili pepper. Didn't suit him, to me.

Just keep in mind, macfadyeni are NOT big lizards. My largest are up around 160g (full) and I expect that they're fully grown. Just make sure they have soem stuff to climb on and some good expansive hide spots. Mine are frequently on or under something, but rarely in between.
He doesn't strike me as skinny in any of those pics. The legs look meaty adn not thin. I'm not noticing any hipbones protruding, and the's got a sort of "second neck" hanging around his throat. He may grow a little bit and put on some extra size, but as far as I know they'll never even approach the stocky build of the mali or geyri which tend to be more terrestrial than arboreal.

really? you don't think he looks thin? i guess you would know better than me. the pic you posted of your male the other day looks bigger and meatier than that and this guy just seemed to have alot of "elephant" skin, but you learn something new everyday. either way i still recommend a fecal for a new animal

Do you know how much those usually run?

jeune18 Aug 07, 2005 02:04 PM

it depends, some vets will let you bring in a fecal and get it tested and from there they will say yes or no about the parasites. that costs about $20 at my vet here, but i think my vet back home that was more like $12.
if the uro has parasites, the vet will have to see him to prescribe any meds so then you are looking at the cost of a vet visit plus the medicines
