Buying a female

dwcraig Aug 06, 2005 10:35 AM

I am thinking of buying a female ball from my local pet store so i can breed with my male. I know the female has to be bigger which is not a problem but my question is this...The store manager told me that he has seen the pair mate before(they are willing to sell me the female and break the set)but have not gotten any eggs as of yet...He said that he knows of at least three times they have mated and still no eggs...should i back away and find a smaller female or is this something that happens? Thanks for the help

How big is the female? Have you or can you sex the snake yourself? It's possible that the female is too small to ovulate, or that they are both males (yes two males will lock up sometimes it's a domination thing). Or maybe the store manager thought it would be a selling point and is just jerking your chain. Also if you are just breeding normals then that would be ok if she was also breeding a normal male previously - but if you are attempting to put her in with a morph - she could retain sperm from the previous donor and you'll get normals. Depending on your confidence and plans you may have a good deal or not. If ou aren't in a hurry to breed this season then maybe a yearling/subadult would be a good idea.
