styrofoam in filter?

faerie822 Aug 06, 2005 11:59 AM

this may sound like a really dumb question...in the process of trying to upgrade my tank, my boyfriend asked me a question. would it be possible to use packing peanuts as filter media? we ordered a computer screen off ebay & it can in a huge box with a bunch of the peanuts, & he asked me if i knew anything about the toxicity of them, the filter is inaccessible to the turtles so there would be no way for them to eat them, & honestly, i dont know if the styrofoam would be good filter media in the first place, but since we have a stockpile of it now he was wondering if it was possible to use it. neither of us know if there was anything that can seep into the water, etc, but the eating it wont be a problem. anyway, we wont use it if we dont find any answers, so no hurry because this is a future project, but if anyone knows, id appreciate it.

I would recmond taking a few of the peanuts and soking them in water overnight, first. This way you can be sure they won't break up or disolve in your filter and release small pieces into the tank. Past that, though, I couldn't help more.
