Ohio Snake Found Near Pond - What kind of Snake is this?

Greetings!

I found this snake near a pond in Springfield Ohio. He was sunning in the morning. Can you tell me what kind of snake it is?

I found the Northern Water Snake in my investigations but the pictures weren't even similar, but with your post, I did a search on this snake and found that mine is older which accounts for the very dark color. I haven't seen him at the pond since my encounter, but I think these guys might be kindof reclusive..we see LOT'S of snakes IN the water, but seldom see them on the ground..
