I have a female melanistic eastern garter that just gave birth to 5 black and three normal looking babies. Now she was a wild caught snakes so i'm assuming she mated with a het melanistic in order to get these results,is this correct?and also is this a normal number of babies and would they all come out at basically the same time?thanks

Melanism is a simple recessive trait, so your conclusion is correct. She must have breed with a hetero. There is an article in herpetologica on melanism inheritance in thamnophis. It is volume 59(4) 2003 pgs 484-489 if your interested.
