Kofa Wildlife Refuge....????????

Kerby... Aug 06, 2005 02:52 PM

Okay because of a comment from a thread below, I have a question??

Someone said that you could not collect a rosy boa from the Kofa Mts. So I looked on the map and it shows the Kofa Wildlife Refuge. So then I looked at the AZ G&F regs and....

You CAN hunt deer on the Kofa Wildlife refuge.

You CAN hunt Big Horn Sheep on the Kofa Wildlife Refuge.

You CANNOT hunt small game, rabbit, squirrel, etc..

So can you take snakes off the refuge?? And where does it say you CAN or CAN'T?

Thanks

...Its true Kerby, & I commented on this awhile back...the Kofa was BLM land prior to becoming a "game range" [for the purpose of recovering bighorn sheep] & then it was incorporated into the USF&W refuge system. When it was BLM land the state of AZ owned the resident, non-federally listed & non-migratory bird wildlife on it, & that included the boas & quail.
Now the feds claim to own those animals & have closed the seasons on all of them except a narrow few the hook & bullet boys like to hunt (deer/sheep/quail/rabbits)...
Now my $100 ? is.... exactly when did the state surrender its jurisdiction or receive any compensation for this federal confiscation of its resident wildlife? The same game was played out on Organ Pipe; BLM to NPS...
Now if theres any good news in any of this...its that a buddy n I drew tags for the great grey ghosts (Buras) for the KOFA this November....
BTW, refuge regs differ on the different refuges, refuge managers make up the rules as they see fit w/ no elected nor legislative oversight...they're hard to find too....buried in the federal cfr's

Hi Kerby!

I love the Kofa area. I've only been there once and spent an afternoon soaking up sun in the Queen Valley. I want to go back and hike the Palm Canyon. Stunning place. I checked out the Kofa NWR site to look for answers to your question. Here are a few quotes that may help:

“Collecting, possessing, molesting, disturbing, injuring, destroying, removing, or transporting any plant or animal or part thereof (alive or dead) is prohibited. (Except for legally taken game.)”
and
“Regulated hunting is permitted for quail, bighorn sheep, deer, cottontail, rabbit, coyote, and fox. All other wildlife is protected.”

Retrieved August 6, 2005 from Kofa NWR, http://www.fws.gov/southwest/refuges/arizona/kofa.html#Index

Best wishes.

....Except for legally taken game.... Taking a snake with a general hunting license is.."legally taking game"....... just like taking a deer with a deer tag is "legally taking game".

...you musta been one of those guys on dates Kerby where no means yes....hahahahahahah...zzzz
Im hurt you didnt believe me tho...
OK I googled it up...does this clarify it for you? Note; they also declare your 2nd ammendment rights to be null & void.
Dontcha, day by day...love your big brother more than ever....
Whats needed is someone to demand to be arrested for some of this nonsence & see if a court will uphold it.....But bigbro would likely insure their wouldn't be a jury present....

Hunting
Regulated hunting is permitted for quail, bighorn sheep, deer, cottontail, rabbit, coyote, and fox. All other wildlife is protected.
Hunting is in accordance with applicable state and refuge regulations. Licenses and permits are required.
The refuge is closed to the taking of predatory animals during deer season, except that deer hunters with valid Unit 45A, 45B, and 45C deer permits may take predatory animals until they have taken a deer.
Private lands occur within the refuge and may be posted.
Shooting from a vehicle is prohibited.
All firearms, including handguns, rifles, and shotguns, within a vehicle must be unloaded and either cased or broken down.
Trapping is not permitted on the refuge.
Hunting seasons for the refuge are listed in current Arizona Game and Fish Department hunting regulations.

Just messin' witcha John...BUT...

""The refuge is closed to the taking of predatory animals during deer season, except that deer hunters with valid Unit 45A, 45B, and 45C deer permits may take predatory animals until they have taken a deer.""

....may take predatory animals until they have taken a deer....

Aren't snakes predators?? Just ask a rodent or a lizard....they will tell ya! LOL And if I get drawn (legally licesned) for deer in that area and I'm scouting in August (means that I haven't taken my deer yet) I can take predator animals (snakes)...correct??? LOL

Oh, and I never had a date that said "no" LOL

...if you have an Arizona hunting license you can take rosy boas. It is a game refuge that allows hunting/legal collecting. This is one I'd be willing to fight in court, especially after talking to a buddy of mine who is a superior court judge....
