Alterna Report...

Dave Long Aug 06, 2005 03:41 PM

Last week, my wife Jane and I headed out to Alternaland for a bonsai trip. We hunted the River Road/Xmas on Saturday night, Sanderson Sunday and Monday night, and the Huecos on Tuesday night. We had a blast but the trip was too short. Hopefully we can make it back out next month..

After having the best venison steak we've ever eaten with Troy and Marla, we headed down to the river with high expectations. Rainfall totals during the previous week were rumored to be between 3-4" both on the river and in the Xmas mts. Although conditions seemed perfect, all we saw were 3 night snakes and a western diamondback. It was fun to see Steve Boyd and his grand daughter out there after not having seen him in a few years. We hunted the xmas until 4:30, but the xmas alterna still eludes me...

Sunday we decided to head over to Sanderson and meet up with my good buddy Eric. Last year was Jane's first year looking for alterna, and on her first night, we hunted Sanderson. On the second cut she ever spotlighted, she found a small female blairs, and 15 minutes later, she found a male dark blairs to go with it (they were 0.3 miles apart). I was really hoping that her luck in Sanderson would continue, but I couldn't have dreamed what actually happened.

We left Sanderson at dusk, and I hunted the first cut east as we left town. At 9:14, my wife spotted her first cut, the one on the south side of the road, approx 2.5 miles east of Sanderson. Half way through the cut, BAM! There's an alterna! It is a female medium phase that looks like a blairs from the top, and an alterna phase from the side. Here's a pic of her:

...after catching the first alterna, we continued east. Conditions were awesome..15 mph breeze from the southeast, low 80's, and an alterna already in the bag! The pressure was off..lol.

17 minutes after finding the first alterna, my wife yells "grayband!" I slam on the brakes and run over to the cut to find this screaming light alterna phase female:

Eric and I have hunted the same stretch of road together alot over the years and both of us have had varying degrees of success. Often times, Eric finds multiple alterna on a given night, and he loves to say, "you've got to catch 1 before you can catch two", or "you've got to catch two to get three..." So when Eric pulled up and asked how we were doing, I told him "you've got to catch 2 to get three." His response was "Bulls**t! lol

He seemed like he was hunting a little harder after that, and sure enough, at 1:15, he scored this nice light male blairs on 5 mile hill:

We didn't see anything else that night except a reddish adult suboc that ducked into a boulder pile before we could get to him. I've never seen one that color before, and I was bummed I wasn't able to get a picture.

The next night, we decided to stay in Sanderson for one more night. We spent the day looking at property, hoping to find a deal like John F. found, but it seems like prices have doubled in the last year. We also spent time hanging out with Roy (thanks for the hospitality and great rates!) and Tim B. talking snakes. Tim was walking cuts with a maglite the night before, so I lent him my Stubby II hoping it might give him some luck. It turns out he was saving his luck for later, but I'll get to that in a bit....

The next night sarted out slow, and it didn't seem like much was moving. At around 1 am, Tim was walking 5 mile hill as we drove up and he found this neat emoryi, seen here "in situ."

We left the cut to Tim and headed west. At 1:15, we found this awesome female dark alterna morph on the first cut east of town:

The dark alterna was our only snake of the night, but we sure weren't complaining.

Eric had to work back in San Antonio so he had to start heading east halfway through the night. Before he left though, he left us with the male alterna he found the night before.....I guess he figured with 3 females, we'd need it more that he did. His generousity is incredible, and he'll be getting some killer babies when we breed these alterna!

Below is a pic of the other alterna hunters we saw. Also, on the way out of town...somebody had made this deer sign anatomically correct...

The last night, we hunted the Huecos, as I've done almost every year for the last 20. Only this time, there had been lots of rain. Conditions were windy and cool (70's) and it seemed perfect, but all we found was an awesome suboc at 1 am. But I'm going back, because I've got to pair up this girl, an '03 from Dan Johnson. Unfortunately the '03 male never ate pinks, and I lost him. Anybody have a male Hueco they want to sell? I would be willing to go cash and a pair of babies back if anybody is interested....

One of the nights we were in Sanderson, Troy found his first ever Xmas, a neat light male alterna morph with some triple alternates. Someday I'll find one there...

The night we were in the Huecos, Troy picked up an awesome Limpia female, Marla found a female 6 mi south of Alpine, Steve Boyd picked up a gap (pics are in a post below) and Tim found a 40" buckskin male River Road. The next 2 nights in a row, Tim scored in the Xmas....an adult male each night, one halloween black blairs with good orange, and a light alterna morph. Hey Tim, where did you get the spotlight you used to find those snakes? lol He definetely saved up his luck....good job!

Congrats to everybody....I can't wait to get out again! Seems like they're moving everywhere...

I had to bail and come home (left Sanderson area at 11:30 pm), but I expected he would have found one there considering I didn't.

p.s. do you know this guy in the pic?LOL......

For a nano second, I thought you had scored in the Huecos Dave. I sure wish you had.

Well, I have a pair of Huecos from Dan J. but the female will not be ready next season. The male, though small, might be ready to breed and maybe we can work something out. If you want to use him, maybe I can run down to your area next season for a day or two. Let me know if you want to work something out.

Later,

Brad

Dave,
Congrats on such a great Texas Trip you had. Eric should really feel lucky, as I am STILL waiting to find a light phase blairs male from East of Sanderson, they are tough as hell to get from out there, at least they have been for me. Fortunately, I have produced a few cb light blairs males from East, but have yet to actually find one out there. When you produce neonates, let me know, I would trade you some for my bloodlines from East. Take Care & Congrats on the Trip your wife & you had! John F.

Dave Long Aug 06, 2005 05:53 PM

John,

I'd love to swap you for some of your east Sanderson dark blairs with good orange.....I've been wanting to get some of those from you for several years.

In fact, if you have any this year that aren't spoken for, please let me know. I'll buy some this year, and trade you for some more when I breed the light phases. I'm really hoping for some top shelf darkies though, and am willing to wait on your list as long as it takes to get some.

If you ever want to sell your house in Sanderson, please let me know..lol I love that place!! The only thing missing this year was getting to hang out with you...

Here's the female we caught on 5 mile hill last year:
