Just bought a Texas Rat...

hefte Aug 06, 2005 08:56 PM

Should arrive early this week but had a few questions. I have a snake room that stays in the mid 80's during the day and never drops below 70 at night even in the winter. Are these temps sufficient or would you provide a basking area. All of my snakes are tropical and require high heat and humidity so this will be a nice break from that but just wondering how you guys normally set up their enclosures in terms of heat and light. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance, Eric-

Those temps will be fine for your new snake. He will not need any extra heat. Is he a "normal" texas or some other morph? Captive bred? May be a bit nippy at first, but with regular handling he should become very easily handled. Enjoy! Duffy

It's Leucistic and just a hatchling. No bug eyes. Thanks for your response I appreciate it. It's cbb and I am expecting her to be nippy, but all my snakes have been nippy when I get them so shouldn't be too much trouble. Am a little worried about the musk though, do they skunk when they get older with normal handling, or does that kind of die down. My blood skunked like crazy when she was really small but hasn't done that for a long time, thanks again, Eric-

I can't remember when either of my Texas rats last musked me. Like most North American Ratsnakes, they will usually quit musking once they adjust to handling. I have not found the musk to be too horrible either. Duffy
