Love coming home to find babies, final tally 18 live and healthy, did not find any dead nor any slugs but was not there to watch. She is a new breeder, first time bred this year, not from my stock.

A couple of pics of the babies in the mom's cage:

and a surprise, this one has NO crescents, not a one. Checked both sides:

First, how's your year going....any babies yet?

Second, I remember seeing some higher prices for no crescent babies in the past, didn't pay too much attention as they are not what I am working towards. I like the bullseye look myself. Do you have any thoughts on value for the one I produced with no crescents at all? I checked and there are none on either side head to tail.

Dave,
....I did see that one ad where the guy was asking for more money for the BRB with no crescents. That is the only time that I have seen anyone who thinks they are worth more than regular BRBs. I have seen a few like that at shows at regular prices. I had a large imported female years ago with no crescents and she threw normal looking babies when bred to normal looking males. I had a few of her normal looking offspring in my breeding program and they all threw normal looking babies. My gut feeling from this is that this is not a heritable aberrant trait but the offspring may not have been heterozygous.

Good to know, We must have seen the same ad, I had not heard of one having no crescents before and personally, I like BIG crescents.....the more color the better (IMO)

How's your breeding going?

Now is the worst time for me, I am usually a little anxious waiting for the first litter but nothing like the time between the first and last. Now that I know the first has dropped, I'll be checking the cages several times each day waiting for the rest. First thing when I get up, when I get home from work, before I go to bed and any other time I pass by the room I keep them in. Not to mention this year I have a couple of bulseye "experiments" going on.

Dave,
...I had two babies out of one a couple weeks ago. Momma seems fine and that must have been all of them. Lots of other gravid ones are looking good but it is now a week or two later than I expected them to lay. This time of year is tough on the nerves.

Dave,
Congrats on your FOS litter. Nice looking babies too! I also saw that ad several months ago with "virtually no crescents" that particular snake was going for $300......at least that is what it was advertised for. If I'm not mistaken, there are some Canadian breeders promoting the breeding of this pattern. I suppose beauty is all in the eye of the beholder and the color/pattern that appeals to oneself doesn't necassarily appeal to others or the exact reverse of that observation. IMO the Bullseye's are more attractive....as least in my mind's eye, however, that baby of your's does appeal to me as well. Complete patterning is different IMO than mostly or almost complete and I think that particular baby would be something I would be proud to stick my name on. I still am pretty new and know very little of genetic potential, but I would speculate that he/she could produce variations of the pattern and could be a part of a very bold black outline in a Bullseye. How to accomplish that I don't know but assume it would take many generations of breeding trials. How much is it worth? That I think is the tough question....and the answer may surprise you. It could just as easily be the perfect snake for someone's project as it is not. The only baby I kept for my own of the 2 litters that were born to my snakes is a female with 21 connected black dorsal rings that create a zig-zag down her back. At first I was thinking I would try to breed some zig-zags, then after a year or so, I didn't think she was as nice as more common patterned BRB's. Now I am liking her more again. I just keep feeding her in hopes I'll make up my woman-mind. Or, maybe, since she's my first....I think she's something special (haven't seen much mention of striped BRB's lately). Color is not too impressive, but I am sure proud of her and she has a great temperment.....definately my favorite. Who knows what yours will bring...just have a good time with it and learn something exclusive from it.

Linda
