Question about feeding

MegF Aug 07, 2005 12:14 AM

My girl is feeding great on small adult mice. They are pretty small. Maybe a little larger than a large hopper. She is out looking for more the night I feed her and all the nights after. I've ordered medium mice to transition her to, but in the meantime, can I feed two small mice? My other snakes take multiple (never more than 2) when they are going to transition to the next size, but I'm not sure about chondros. Would it be alright to do this, or should I just wait until the mediums get here, and feed off the rest of the smalls to my corns? They're transitioning to mediums too.

That would be acceptable, i would give your girl 2 one week then back to a single prey item and repeat. Once the mediums arrive i would continue to offer a small one week then a medium the next. This will obviously help you get rid of the small mice as well as provide a smoother transition. With that said my Sorong is also recieving small adult mice, which fills him/her up nicely. After feeding him i usually check in on him just to make sure all is well and he is always looking for more even though another item would probably have him bursting at the seems. My Biak does the same thing. I only have 2 chondros so my experience is slight, but once they are in hunt/feeding mode it seems that is what they are fixated on. Goodluck, i'm sure it will be a smooth transition. Clint

I'm not as concerned about using up the mice, as I have 3 others who can eat two until the mediums come, or the small is used up. Any reason why you switch back and forth from the new size to the old, and from 2 back to one?

The thought is that they are getting a meal larger then they are used to consuming. By switching back to the normal/previous sized meal the transition is easier on their digestive system. I would think this is how they eat in a natural enviroment, not every meal they get is the same size. Some are large prey items, some smaller. It has also been thought that to big of a prey item for a chondro can/may cause prolapes. Maybe some chondros are just more susseptable than others. Either way if you switch back to the usual sized prey item you've just cut the odds in half of this happening while your little one gets adjusted to the larger sized meals. This was suggested to me in regards to my growing boas, per a breeder. I thought on it and it stands to reason so when i think it is time for a larger prey item, i switch back and fourth for a few feedings. Is this really necessary, i doubt it. If you felt so inclined to just go with the medium sized mice i'm sure that would be fine as well. I hope this helped, Clint

Yes thanks. I've had corns so prolapse has never really been a concern. Thanks for your input. I'll see what she looks like after eating one mouse tonight and if it seems larger than normal, I'll only feed her the one. She hasn't shown much of a bulge, just a lump that is pretty much gone by the next day.

Meg try to switch her to rat pups as they have more stuff in them to make tempest grow fast

MegF Aug 07, 2005 03:48 PM

Maybe I'll see if the order has gone in. If not, maybe I'll swicth it. Are rat pups about the size of medium mice?

Hey Meg the rat pups are nice and fat and she will only grow faster.I feed my little one every 4 days and this thing eats like there is no tommorow. As you may well know when a reptile is your they eat to grow and when the become adults they eat to sustain themselves.

MegF Aug 07, 2005 08:55 PM

I only feed every week. I don't want to power feed her, and I don't need her to grow fast, just be healthy. I have heard that rats are more nutritious, but so far only my adult corn is on a small rat every 2 weeks. I did put an order in for the rat pups today. He's going to talk to his supplier and see if he can get some for me.
