Eggbound?

starsevol Aug 07, 2005 06:29 AM

My female laid eggs last week. She is now blue. I have handled her since she laid but this morning I noticed she had an egg size lump near her cloaca and another a little farther down her body? She is active and seems fine. My vet is closed today. Has anyone else ever had this problem? How scared should I be?

happens all the time.......snakes in cages are too lazy to lay all the eggs.or get too weak at times.

anyways.....sometimes you can just push them and they pop out..the ones farther up need to come down to the vent first or you'll rip the oviduct.....

so to make it simple.......you don't know what you are doing so get someone to do this all for you.........the ones father up will need to be aspirated (yolk fluids sucked out of egg with a syringe).......

and just because a person has a degree that says they are a "VET" doesn't mean they have a clue on how to do this.......

......they will shove the egg out and rip the sbake and make shock set in and kill it at times...some know what they are doing...but some are amazingly not informed on reptiles at all.....

ask them questions.........alot........

you got a snake breeder near you........?

I have been checking the female everyday all week and this morning was the first time I noticed the egg by the cloaca. Is there any chance in the world she can expel the egg herself?

yes she may........keep her warm and keep a nest box in there...

Like I said.you MAY be able to just pop it out if it is right at the opening......

she cannot eat or defecate right if it is blocking the 3 openings in her vent......

don't squish her but see if it comes out........hemostats can be used to grab egg if you can see part of it ......mineral oil can be used as a lubricant.......

Well, the snake and I have just gotten back from the vet. She was given an injection of oxy and calcium orally. The snake is now in a warm cage with moist vermiculite and a newpaper over her to make her feel secure. I would rather she do this on her own instead of risking injury to her. Hopefully things come out ok.

I have never used vermiculite as an egg laying chamber......
I hate the way it sticks to everything....

I use moss,,,hagnum moss........moistened.......

I have used live green moss even cut up .........it then dies and turns brown and sooner or later turns into peat more or less.......

you can also use peat moss if you can not find whole shagnum moss.........I know Clint Boyer used peat and liked it......

I have also used moistened care fresh....damp paper towels in a hurry and even damp cloth or dampened shredded newspaper.(bad choice)......these were temporary one day remedies till I ran to a store.........

.........try something better than vermiculite...the snake will probably enjoy digging in it better......

Thanx........

good luck.........
