Looking for greek tortoise native habitat

5hawn Jul 16, 2003 08:13 PM

Surprisingly I found very little information on this topic while searching the web. I am desperate to find my greek spur-thigh that escaped some time ago. I am surrounded by mountainous terrain which has made searching difficult. I dont know if I should concentrate in the tall grass, open areas, hills, rocky areas, or sunlit fields. With moderately hot temps here in PA, I dont know if I should search more in the morning, afternoon, or early evening. Does anyone know of native vegetation they may happen to take preference to? If I sound desperate, thats because I am. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Shawn

I have a greek tortoise myself, but am VERY FAR from an expert. However, I do remember reading that the golden or tan greeks are more likely from sandy desert areas, while the darker varieties (olive green/black like mine) are probably from more rocky areas. Maybe that will help. I would definitely think he would be hiding somewhere...not out in the open. Sometimes they are so hard to see when they are trying to hide. Good luck! I really sympathize with your plight.

Try to locate someone with a hound that tracks scents. Let him smell the cage and then have him track the tortoise.

Thanks for trying to help. Unfortunately it was some time ago, so there is no way to scent track her. As far as coloration goes, she was an adult, and mostly tan with a little brown (not a golden). I was just hopeful that maybe someone else had dealt with my problem. Ive searched the internet and have found very little about their habits and habitats in the wild.
