Used a Permanent Marker to mark the eggs- will they be OK?

sacredpurr Aug 07, 2005 02:34 PM

Hi, Well My husband used a permanent marker to mark the top of each egg and now I am worried they may die if the markers are toxic. It doesn't say anything about being toxic on the box or the pens. They are from Staples and are black Permanent Markers. Has anyone done this and the eggs came out OK? I am a worried Mom to be here, These eggs are out of my German Giant and I lost her last batch due to problems in the incubator. So I have been waiting a long time for these babies. Thanks Deb

sorry to say this but chances are you will loose them. you shouldent mark the eggs at all with anything. there not like chicken, goose, or any other animals. they use the outside of the shell to breath. the toxins from the marker once eggs start to take in moisture will bleed into the embro, hopefully it wont happen but chances are not too good with that. if by any chance you need to mark an egg use a lead free pencil.

Hi, Did you ever lose a clutch to the same thing? I need to know if someone did. I would think if the pen is toxic it would say on the box. I know the marking of the eggs in a Pen is wrong but just wondering if anyone has done it before and what the outcome was. Thanks, Deb

I used a Sharpie to mark the top of my eggs and they came out just fine with no problems at all and most marks are non toxic anymore so I wouldn't worry to much because if it was toxic the package would say.

Oh, Thank you Thank you Thank You!!!! I thought because there wasn't a warning on the Pens or box that it was non toxic but of course I worry anyway. I am glad to hear yours came out fine, that gives me some hope. It will never happen again but I just hope these will be OK and I was hoping to hear from someone who had done this to find out the outcome. TX Deb

Don't sweat it, if you lose the eggs it won't be from the marker. I have marked all my eggs and have had many eggs over the last 10 years, and have never had a clutch go bad do to marking. I have though had them go bad from not marking and my two year old turning over the incubator and me not getting eggs back to their correct spot. So I encourage marking eggs.
