SAYING GOODBYE TO VELVET........

sacredpurr Aug 07, 2005 03:48 PM

Last night my beautiful blond Leopard baby died, She had been sick since I got her from the breeder(1 month), He sent me a sick tort yet all he did was give me a hatchling baby to keep the faith as he claims. We had a feeling she would not pull through and he promised me he'd make it right if she didn't. I paid alot for her and spent over $350.00 in Vet bills only to still lose her. Now his email says user unknown and I do not see him on Kingsnake. This hurts alot! But whats worse is that Velvet is gone. Even though she was only with me a very short time I thought she was a great tort and I will miss her.....Necropsy is scheduled for tomorrow. Thanks for listening I just needed to vent! Deb

This is Marley a baby sulcata that the breeder sent to me when I told him Velvet was sick. He doesn't cost as much as Velvet my Leo did but hes a fun little guy. I just want another blond Leo baby. I miss Velvet and I know nothing will take her place but I love the Leos!!! TX

Hi there,

that is such a sad story, shame on that breeder!
I am relatively new to keeping tortoises and to be honest have never really been a pet person before, but having now had two little Russians for around 2 years now ( Mr Snuffles and Scrabble ) - I have to say I would be gutted if I was to lose them.

can you send me the name of the breeder off list? pirog@cox.net

Thanks to everyone who wrote to me privately and on here. I plan to do all I can to locate this guy. I would assume he hasn't moved and his address and phone number is the same. I hope he will give me a replacement and be kind since he is aware that Velvet was sick. On a happier note I am getting a 8 month old Leo from another person on a trade. He is a normal colored one but cute just the same. I still want a blond and will try to get one from somewhere yet since this breeder doesn't have another one I want either money or some Tort from him to equal her value. Wish me luck I love Leo's and in her memory The new one will be Velvet also. "Memory of Velvet" is his full name. I can't wait to get him Weds. Pictures will be posted soon!!!! In the mean time if anyone has any detective info on how to locate someone please let me know so I can do this alot faster. Thank you for all you help and your kindness in my sad time. Deb

The bottom line is you got might have gotten taken but as a person who has been on the other end of this kind of banter we really don't know without the input of the seller.

Leopards can get sick overnight. They can be very delicate.

As to the 'blonde leopard' issue... it's a sales pitch and I don't think it warrants any merit. There does seem to be some genetics involved but I think the majority of those sold are the result of environmental conditions.

As far as getting another leopard... you can't go wrong with Riparian Farms. I'll be willing to bet you can get a nice light leopard for the cost of a normal. Just tell Richard what you are looking for.

Hatchling leopards can get sick quickly and drop off just like that.
I used to breed them and even my own babies would sometimes get sickly and drop dead after they had been thriving for months. There seemed to be no real reason for this.
Once they got past a year or so I never had problems.
My adults were fine though after many years and they were all imports.

sacredpurr Aug 08, 2005 08:14 PM

Hello, I agree too but just so everyone knows....Velvet was not a hatchling, she was over 15 months old. She came to me with swollen eyes which after two weeks we fixed that and she started eating again, Later we found out she had Pneumonia and she was treat and seemed to looks and act better except eating she still wasn't interested in food. Then the eyes started staying shut again...not as swollen but still she would only open her eyes during her soak. We tried everything with her and the Vet bills were piling up. Finally even though the Pneumonia seemed to be gone she stopped moving and still not eating. The Vet found Parasites and we gave her medications to get rid of them. But she didn't improve. On her last day she opened her eyes and I was excited thinking she was feeling better and within 2 hours I came back to check her and do her soak and she was gone. Other than her treatment protcol thats it in a nut shell. I have found the breeders number and have called and left a message. I pray he makes this right, Please send good luck my way and thanks all who emailed me privately and on here. I will keep you posted on the necropsy findings ad on my new tort status. Deb

Is that leopard soaking with a Redfoot?

Hey Ed.

Sure does look like we have a redfoot soaking with sulcata there.

HMMM -- there wonder what else was being done wrong. Not to jump to any conclusions but there are always two sides to every story.

Whatever. I just wanted to say hi and see how the boxies Julie sent to you are doing. They are some nice animals.

I have three RT's now. They keep coming in right and left to the rescue. I decided to keep a small group of males. I have three and they are getting along just fine and forth is coming in on Monday. Most found wandering around Long Island.

To all. Last post was meant to be a private message to Ed and I wasn't paying attention.

Sorry.

sacredpurr Aug 09, 2005 01:08 PM

My message to you is: Please read before you write. This is nothing I did wrong. The pictures of her soaking with the redfoot was when I got them home from shipment and they were in the same box together and I found out they had lived together all their lives. Once here they had their own places(Not together) I have owned torts almost all my life and know many things plus I am learing every day! Although it doesn't look right to soak them together, I figured since they were together in the box and had lived together all their lives if there was sickness both would already have been exposed. Being a Emergency Vet Tech I know what you are saying here and I do not appreciate it during this sad time. The necrospy report should be available today and I can guanantee it won't be from being with a baby redfoot. The damage was already done before the picture was taken........ Thanks for the apologies though......

sacredpurr Aug 09, 2005 12:57 PM

Yes they were but the two were raised together from the breeder, I got three torts from him and those two were together with him from day one and then a week later when he sent the sulcata I found out the Leopard had been with a bunch of baby sulcatas too. So that all could of contributed to her problems. I personally do not keep different species together with the exception of grazing. I have a big pen, sometime I put the red foots, sulcatas and my Greek together to graze for about 2-3 hours. But usually they take turns. My Pen is movable. And she was sick from the breeder not from being with another tortoise species here. They all have different indoor inclosures for the type of tort they are. I have had torts and turtles for over 25 years but this was my first Leo. I am sure mistakes were made but her illness was on going from before I got here. TX Deb

Deb -

Didn't read the part of the thread where you got her in that condition. Sorry for thinking perhaps it happened after the fact -- thought perhaps she may have gotten ill AFTER you had
gotten her.

As far as mixing the the different species it probably is best to keep them separate. The breeder should not have kept them together. They have very different requirements and even though they were raised together there is still a risk keeping allowing them to live together

EJ Aug 09, 2005 03:27 PM

I don't have a problem with mixing species at all but that is one combination that is pushing the limits to the extreme. Redfoots are notorious bug carriers (even cb animals) and leopards are extremely suseptable to picking up bugs and add to that, soaking them together that is pushing it. Sorry if you take offense by this observation but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Hi Ed, No I am not upset with what you saw and stated but how the other poster indicated If I did that, that I was probably doig more things wrong. That I most likely caused her illness( I know now that she didn't read the whole story so I am not attacking her here) Just wanted to explain how I felt at the time is all. Yes I agree about the bugs and mixing species ect but my point was just that these two had already been exposed to each other for over 1 year and if there was any illness/ cross contamination it had already occurred and just because I let them soak together the day I got them from shipment wasn't why she was sick or that I was doing other things wrong. That is what I was saying and another point was just that I was sad over her loss and didn't appreciate the fact that I had to defend myself when I was going thru this. Another thread should of been started about the mixing of redfoots/ Leos or something. But yes people need to be aware of this that mixig species is not a good idea. Tx Deb

Hello,
I am very sorry to hear about your loss and understand how you feel (my dog died recently). This has gotten me very worried though as I am about to buy a Leopard and would hate to have a tradgedy like this happen to me. So could you please e-mail me the name of the breeder that sold you the sick Leopard. Thank you very much.

You did the same thing to me Deb. Last week you sold me a sick tortoise and will not answer my email. I contacted you within 24 hours that the animal was sick and gave you the chance to do the right thing. I offered to ship the sick Russian back to you and asked that you refund the money I paid you in good faith. You never even bothered to answer my email.
I guess you wanted to pass along the misery and expense of trying to keep a sick tortoise alive.
Shame on you.

nigelisabelle Aug 20, 2005 11:32 AM

Deb,
Sorry for your loss. I can't imagine how you feel. I have two Hermann hatchlings and our lives revolve around them!

May I ask if that list after your email are ALL of your currently animals/reptiles? If so........WOW! You rock!
