Baby Bearded Dragon Missing Hand HELP!!!!

GerryOConnor511 Aug 07, 2005 11:52 PM

I just purchased a baby bearded dragon who was being kept in a module next to a green basilisk. The Grating that divided them was large enough for the baby beardie to slip his arm through and the basilisk took off his forearm.
What do i do! I am keeping the little guy on paper towels right now that i am changing daily. I am also soaking him daily outside on days with favorable weather. I have also put snake oil on the wound to try and heal it up quickly.
Is there anything else that i could do to help this little guy to have a safe and speedy recovery?

I know many beardies who do fine with missing limbs. How much of the front leg is missing? Just the hand, or all the way up? If he is still managing to move about ok on his own then you should live a fine life. You may need to modify his home a little (the generall set up being lower, with low sturdy basking branches instead of higher ones).

If the wound is still open you can also use neosporin to help it heal. you can also flush the wound before applying the neosporin with dilute betadine. I dont know much about snake oil, unfortunately.

Watch for signs of infection. If the wound heals without infection, and the babies appetite stays up, you should be fine. If you start to see infection or his appetite dwindles he will need to see a vet asap

I have heard FROM MY VET (so if it's wrong please correct me so i don't believe something false) that if bearded dragons are really young and are given a lot of TLC they can sort of regenerate missing parts. I doubt the whole hand will come back, but the limb might get longer and make it easier to move around.

I'm not a vet. and don't want to tell vets about there bussness but I have 2 bd with missing limbs and there over a year old and they do not grow back. I got them when they were about 2 or 3 months old and the limbs were already missing. The missing limbs don't slow them down.

you purchased a baby dragon from a pet store that allowed the beaerdie to have his arm bitten off by another species? and a tropical species?

how much did you pay for it?

I paid 5 dollars for him. and yes it is quite terrible the way the reptiles are kept at this store. I currently work at this pet store and have voiced my complaints on several occasions. Because of the short time i have worked at this store My opinions aren't thought to highly of. I took him home because i knew that if he were kept there any longer his wound would have gotten infected. I am slowly trying to change the way the reptiles are taken care of at my job. Unfortuneatly it is a slow process.
