What kind of snake - FL

bargainlady Aug 08, 2005 01:47 AM

We live in Central Florida and occasionally come across Black Racers and typical garden(r) snakes during the summer. Today we saw a teeny tiny snake, maybe 9" long...Skinny like a pencil. About 2" of its tail was red. Any ideas what it could be?? Thanks!

First thing that comes to mind is the ringneck snake, Diadophis punctatus. The underside of the tail is red, & it often turns the tail over to display the bright color when frightened. Did your snake have a yellow ring around its neck?
