Help! Intimidation problem with adult females housed together

dianedfisher Aug 08, 2005 09:48 AM

I have 2 adult females housed with 1 male in a 6' tall x 4' wide by 2' deep enclosure. They have many branches, vines, rope configurations to allow them private space and access to a private warm basking spot. In just the past 2 weeks I have noticed my largest female head-bobbing, arm waving at the other female (the smaller female). Yesterday she bit at her and chased her. This morning she attacked her in the pool and sat on her. the smaller dragon is the oldest of the 2 and laid an infertile clutch of 4 eggs earlier in the Spring. The big (obviously Alpha) female is a few months younger and has not yet been gravid. I have also never noticed any signs of sexual activity among the male and either of the females. He is the same age as the younger female. I do not have a suitable 2nd enclosure to move the smaller female into. These are pretty large dragons-Male 30"-600 gr, Female 27"-400 gr., Female 21" 160 gr. I hand feed them all and have not noticed these activities until very recently. Any suggestions on how to calm down Alpha female would be sincerely appreciated.

Breeding is usually done in the early morning, and rarely infront of witnesses. I seen mine breeding only once, even though they lay fertile eggs every year. Have separate basking sites available, and they will work it out themselves, as to who gets the best territory. My females are territorial towards each other as well, the competion will stimulate breeding behavor and egg laying.

Thanks for the reply! Drago is fortunately pretty fast. I did notice the male head bobbing yesterday evening for the first time ever. I purchased some new vines last night with larger leaves and a few very large fern-type silk leaves and put them in the viv to block Tripod's view around the entire enclosure. She likes to sit on the cholla in the very middle of the viv and watch Drago's every move. I hope they give Drago somewhere less visible to co-exist. Tripod chases her down, no matter where she runs in the upper area of the enclosure, but she rarely jumps down to the bottom to go after her. Unfortunately, the bottom of the viv is their cool area and I worry about her spending too much time down there where it's only 75F. Thanks, again.
