Dead egg in fertile egg mass...HELP!

cpn_aaron Aug 08, 2005 11:23 AM

The egg that was looking poorly has died. I need to remove it from the egg mass. How do I do this without injuring the fetile healthy eggs. I don't want to leave the egg and invite mold and bacteria. Should i try to razor blad cut it away as close to the connections to other eggs as posible or what? Also one of my eggs developed some yellow slime on it, could this be from being in a closed tupperware container? I open the container about two times aweek to check on the eggs and allow ventiliation. Should I just leave the top off? Thanks.

Sometimes you can just pull the egg loose with a little pressure. It may leave a little thin spot on the other eggs but it usually want hurt them. You can also use a razor but be very carefull not to cut into the good eggs. Pull on the bad egg as you cut between them so you can see more of what your doing. As for the other problem I wouldnt worry to much if the eggs get a little something on them they will be fine. If the moisture gets to heavy then you can leave the top off a day or two and it will dry out some but you have to keep a close eye on them because they could also get to dry and start to dip in. Well good luck with the eggs and try not to worry to much about them. They can and will still hatch with these little problems.

Thanks. I do worry. I worry by nature and also becasue this is my first clutch of eggs ever. Next season will see about 4-5 clutches, so I hope to get this right and not mess it up. I'll try to remove the dead egg today and take a good look at the other egg. It is dimpling a little but all the other eggs are fine with no dimpling. So I may add moist substrate around the other eggs and carefully swab off the spot with a q tip
