Robyn@ProExotics: Success speaks for itself.

JimG Aug 08, 2005 02:11 PM

I'm not sure if you still frequent this forum but in my opinion you are sorely missed! I've learned more about proper Uromastyx care from your posts than anywhere else.
Now that your methods have proven themselves with the baby ornatus you had for sale, could you share just how successful you were? How many eggs were produced, how many hatched, how long was incubation, at what temp, under what conditions (medium and humidity)etc.?
Do you have plans to try other species?

Thank you so much for your work.

Jim

Jim,

I am curious, what makes you think the young ornates that Pro Exotics had for sale were their own?

JimG Aug 09, 2005 07:10 AM

Well, I guess I just assumed they were offspring of their breeding group. Do you know something I don't?

I could be mistaken, but I believe those ornates were European imports; if you'll notice, most of the reptiles for sale are labeled u.s.c.b. (meaning United States captive bred), but the ornates, as I recall, were lested as c.b., with no provenance given...again, I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure they were c.b. imports...

A couple of months ago when I was shopping for Ornates, I came across Robyn's site. As I remember it, he had pictures of individual hatchlings with weight and clutch date info, I don't recall if he listed sex info or not. The way it was presented led me to believe that the hatchlings were his, but of course I could be wrong. He has since changed the site to simply say "sold out".

I certainly hope that he was successful, It is refreshing to see someone attempt to provide a natural environment for uros.

Yes, I agree, the wesbite presentation could very well lead one to believe that these were PE hatchlings. However, I am fairly certain that those listed on the website were not hatched out by Pro Exotics.

I think I have seen enough from Robyn to know that when the time comes that PE is successful with hatching ornates, we will ALL know.

No, I was wondering the same.
Awhile back, I noticed that they were selling captive bred ornates like everyone else but these were not offspring they produced.
I was simply wondering if you saw something in writing claiming that they were successful with ornate clutches this year as the title to your post implies.

I almost purchased an Ornate from Robyn earlier this year. I inquired about the baby's he had in March (which I would assume are the same ones) and these are his exact words from the email,

"the babies we have available right now are captive bred and born, but not from our stock, they are Euro stock. they are the same source that we got our original PE stock from, and I was really happy with the quality of those first babies, so I felt very good about bringing in these babies, until we get production of our own."

I hope that answers your questions. I ended up purchasing my female from Doug becasue it was one of his own. She was a little smaller then I was hoping but the reassurance of it being CB and one of Dougs was enough to help the decision.

Thank you for clearing that up. The thought that the baby ornatus that PE were selling were from their breeders was my own assumption and I didn't mean to insinuate that they were represented as such.
The goal of my post was to try and spark some meaningful exchanges of information. I must admit that I find this forum suprisingly slow considering it's subject lizard. I would love to see this forum become more like the monitor forum here on kingsnake and varanus.net. There are regular discussions/debates of caging, substrate and heating issues, all of which can be adapted and applied to uromastyx.
Thanks to everyone who replied to this post and I'm still hoping that Robyn may visit here again.

sorry for the delay, things are so busy i actually have a hard time posting in the forums regularly : )

the above quote from my email captures it pretty well, so i won't rehash that.

as for our own breeding, we have eggs in the ground now, we are letting them cook in the soil of the cage, so we are expecting to see babies sometime soon. with varying temps and humidities, and a large area for the females to choose to lay, along with a night drop, the time frame is pretty much up in the air though : )

Hi Robyn,

I can't wait to see your new little ones when they hatch. I've managed to hatch out 3 little malis. They're about a month old now and have such a personality.
