Aquarium MelaFix V. PondCare MelaFix

btma Aug 08, 2005 06:55 PM

Just to let others know:

Aquarium MelaFix is a 1% solution

PondCare MelaFix is a 5% solution

Both are made by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals, Inc

If You can do the math--The PondCare Version will give you a lot more bang for your buck, and can be directly applied to the wound and to the water (in the proper proportions, of course).

Per snakemastermyke:

"As a treatment I remove my Acro from its water and let its skin dry this doesn't take but 15 minutes. I then apply a 5% dillution of the oil on the snakes wound itself."

"The second method I use is putting Tea tree into the tank with a fish safe form known as Mela-Fix. I tripple the dossage and add a dose every 1/2 water change weekly."

Snakemastermyke, Triple the dosage is for the 1% Aquarium Melafix, correct?

I got some tea tree oil from Fresh Fields, it smells like turpentine! definetly need to dilute it.

Yeah be careful. Some of the OTC versions are not balanced at all so test it in a small amount of water first. Thats the main reason I use the melafix brand, because it is diluted already. Also I must caution you that straight TTO has a lot of alchol (30 proof (LOL)/ 50-60%) in it so dillution is a must.

Yeah thats per the 1%. I am doing some more research on the effects on your nitrate and nitrite levels caused by TTO (tea tree oil). I think this may effect how efficient this material works for prevenative.

Side note:

I am going to try and aquire a second Acrochord, and when I recieve it see what levels of melafix work best for cuirn ghte fungus. I use the tripple does for preventing, but haven't found the perfect level for the cure.
