Female Throwing Tail...Retic Breeding Signs???

sneakyfree Aug 08, 2005 07:12 PM

Two Questions For Pros:

I have not started cooling my retics, but both the male and female have gone off feed for about three weeks (the female ate a huge meal and could just be getting ready to shed, or still somewhat full though)and I have heard that retics will often cycle successfully without being cooled etc. so I put them together to see what would happen...the female lifted her tail up so that I could see pink swelling out her vent, and began erratically switching the tip of her tail back and forth...sometimes moving the whole tail fairly abruptly...is this typical breeding bahavior? Is this a sign she is ready, or not ready?
Also,my male keeps trying to crawl over/near her,but she twitches and scares him away....he is an '03, but is only about 13 pounds, and 8.5 feet long...is he old/big enough? He has fed regularly, but just didn't seem to grow that much for a mainland snake.
Any advice?
Thanks!

Interesting.

I'm not a pro, but my '02 male Jampea just went off feed last week -- first time he's ever done that. I was wondering the same thing... is August signaling a breeding season?

My male Jamp is an '03, not '02. He hatched in March, 2003 and is over 30 pounds. 29 months old. Like I said, it's the first time he's refused food.

That is usually a sign of rejection. It sounds like the male is ready but the female is not yet. Give them some time and reintroduce them and look for the female to be a little more receptive. Good luck. Jud
