Keeping humidity low?

fluffygrue Aug 09, 2005 04:18 AM

I've just adopted a sandfish skink and I'm concerned at how humid his setup is. It should be lower than 25%, but there's condensation on the insides of the tank.. We're in the UK, so outside humidity is minimal!

There's a very shallow water bowl in there, which is producing most of the moisture. I'm planning on changing the glass lid for something like mesh, but really it would be better if the water bowl wasn't evaporating so quickly. There's a 60W bulb producing heat/light during the day, and a heat mat for night-time warmth - temperatures are fine.

Any help very gratefully received - there's lots of info out there on keeping high humidity, not low..!

It's probably the glass lid that's holding in the humidity. Change over to a screen top and you should be good to go.

I agree, it sounds as if your skink enclosure doesn't have near enough ventilation. Another suggestion is perhaps getting a larger enclosure. Not only does this benefit the skink's room, but it allows room for a longer temperature gradient. This means less risk of the 60W bulb overheating the cool end, and the water bowl doesn't have to be near the bulb.
